Sarah Tucker College, the wondrous realization of God's love manifested through the vision and altruistic concern of the physically challenged Miss Sarah Tucker of the mid-nineteenth century, holds pride of place as the first college for women in Southern India. The mission of the college implicit in its motto "So run that ye may obtain the incorruptible crown" is "Service Through Knowledge".Sarah Tucker College was established in 1895 by the Christian Missionary Society, as the first college for women in South India. It is named after Miss Sarah Tucker, a physically challenged lady confined to her room in England, who was moved by the reports of the appalling condition of the women in this region due to their illiteracy, and stepped in with a crusading spirit to provide education for them. Her twenty-four sovereigns came in handy for opening the institution, with just four students. The college was, a century ago , a bold experiment in liberal education in this part of pre-independent India.The college has grown in strength and stature in diverse ways, offering ten undergraduate programmes, six postgraduate programmes and two research programmes in the aided stream, with more than two thousand students on its rolls. This Christian minority institution functioning under the Tirunelveli Diocesan Association (TDTA), is now a First Grade College accredited with B++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India. Autonomy, that has been conferred on the college with effect from June 2007, is another luminous gem added to her crown.
