Zoology and Botany have been taught as ancillary subjects for B.Sc., Chemistry students and as optional subjects for PUC students since 1963 . In the year 1984 Madurai Kamaraj University granted affiliation for the Zoology major course. Since then the department has become a part and partial of the college. Zoology being a natural course, students who are interested and realizing the importance of living things join in this course
Prof. K. Kondalraj, the first Head of the Department, was known for his polite, cheerful and dedicated service. He nurtured the Department with great attention and meticulous work. He was succeeded by Professor K.Nathar.
Presently Prof. K. Nathar, as the Head of the Department, is rendering his tireless services along with his team of eminent teachers for the academic and non-academic upliftment of student community.

The students of Biology Department are advised and guided in making and planning their future career by the Career Guidance Cell formed by the staff of Zoology Department. It motivates the students to continue their studies after graduation. Every year many of the students from this Department are being selected for P.G. courses in various Universities and Colleges.

The Computer available in the department is of immense use for the faculty to develop their knowledge and to expand the experience in software programmes. To acquire the knowledge of working of software programmes, the computer is used by the students, which are in the realm of syllabus.

Many of the students from this department are working in Government schools and private Schools, Defence Services, government offices and private companies. Our old student Mr. M. Mohamed Meeran is now working as lecturer in Micro Biology Department of our college. They are the inspiring models to the coming generation.

Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)

The department of Commerce started functioning from the year 1971. Before commencement of B.Com. Degree, Commerce was offered as an optional subject for Pre-University students. Then the management realised the importance of commerce education and got affiliation for B.Com. Degree course in 1975. From the very introduction, the degree course has a consistent demand from students of this area. Since the academic year 2001-2002 “Business Correspondence” and “Office Methods” are offered as alternative subjects in lieu language under Part I. Costing and Income Tax subjects are being offered as Optional subjects under part III along with the other commerce Subjects.

To fulfill the dreams of our beloved Founder, the management with their enormous efforts got affiliation for starting P.G degree course in the year 1986. This is the first P.G. Course offered by the college. Subjects like Income tax and Cost Accounting are offered as optional Subjects in M.Com.
To cater to the needs of the students a separate Departmental Library is available and one of the staff is in charge of the Departmental Library. At present the Library is equipped with 487 books. Besides, a Certificate course, a Diploma course and another Advanced Diploma course in Advertising, Sales promotion and sales Management are being offered by the Department for the first year, second year and third year students respectively. These courses are conducted as Vocational Courses with the aid of U.G.C. The Head of the department is the Co-ordinator of the course. The classes are conducted after the college hours. A separate library for Vocational course students is also functioning

Some of the stalwarts of the departments are Prof. Mohamed Fathahullah and Prof. R.K.Palanivelu. Their services paved the way for the development of the Department. Presently Prof. S.Umar Baruk has been working as the Head of Department since 2002.He is guiding the students properly and also leads the Department in an effective way. Faculties Mr. A. Mohamed Jaffer and Mrs.S.Hasan Banu of this Department have been conferred with Doctorates by Madurai Kamaraj University. Six staff members of this Department are now undergoing part time Doctorates programmes in Madurai Kamaraj University.

The computer available in the department is in maximum use of staff in developing their knowledge in software programmes. The alumni of this department are now working in various high posts in different capacities.

Bachelor of Science (BSc Computer Science)

B.Sc Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science came into existence in the year 1988. Computer Science being job oriented professional course, the department attracts students from far areas.
Mr. S. Sirajudeen, Selection Grade Lecturer is working as Head of the Department since its inception. Under his able guidance, Mr. M. Mohamed Meeran, Mr. M. Sulthan Ibrahim and Mr. S. Peer Mohideen Mudalali are working with enthusiasm and spirit.

The Department of Computer Science is the youngest Department in the aided category in this college. This department is organizing job oriented certificate courses for both Computer Science and Non-Computer Science students, teaching and non-teaching staff, employees from other organizations, and unemployed youths.

The dedicated service of the staff has made the department to produce consistent excellent academic records. It is evident from the fact that the department has been honoured with rolling cup for the best performing department awarded by the College Management in the years 1999 and 2003.
Almost every year nearly 60% of our students are getting admission in M.C.A, M.Sc. (C.S), and M.Sc (I.T) and in other higher studies offered by the various universities in India.

Many of the students of this department are well placed in different capacities both in India and in countries like Austria, Canada, U.S.A, and in the Gulf. They are inspiring models to the upcoming generation.
The Staff members maintain constant touch with the old students through “Alumni Association”, which has been functioning from the inception of the department. The relationship maintained over the years with the old students of this department has yielded best positive results. A sum of Rs. 23,600/- was donated by Mr.K.Ganesan, Mr.B.Muthukrishnan, Mr.I.Mohamed Abdullah, Mr.S.Mohamed Iqbal and Mr.N.Sathiya Seelan, all are working in abroad.

As per their wish, this amount was utilized to setup a department library wherein latest books have been stocked. The books are properly utilized by the students in preparation for the University and Entrance Examinations, Seminars, Project works, Assignments and other academic works.
The Department has also extended community service in the form of consultancy service and guidance. The notable service of this kind is that the service extended to Uthamapalayam Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd., Uthamapalayam. The bank has utilized the technical knowledge of the staff of the department to computerize the Bank transactions in the year 2000.
The technical service of the department has also been used at different levels by the college.

The computerization of Salary Bill of staff members, and the verification of library books and preparation of Library Stock Report during the year 1996 and 1997 respectively are of the best examples.
The department has organized many educational tours which helped the students to know the outside world.

The aforesaid achievements have become possible due to the dedicated service and co-operation among the staff and it is to continue in the years to come

Bachelor of Science (BSc Physics)

B.Sc Physics

The Physics Department came into existence in the year 1973. Ever since it has been growing by leaps and bounds. Physics being the much sought - after course, students from far-flung areas join the department.

The First head of the department, Prof. M.Ramaswamy known for his dedicated service for the cause of education, nurtured the department with great care and meticulous work. Next Prof, D.Sowmyanarayanan took charge and it was under his stewardship the faculty brought laurels to the college by producing students of excellent caliber and ennobling character.

At present Prof. G.Govindarajan in his capacity as the head of the department is rendering his valuable service along with his team of committed teachers to the student community. The department frequently organizes special seminars to enthuse students to perform far excellence. It is indeed proud of consistently achieving excellent academic records. This year the success percentage of the physics students is 90%.

The department has eminent faculty who evince keen interest in educating students for better placement in society. It serves in motivating students to pursue higher studies. Almost every year four to five students of the department are getting selected for M.C.A. /M.Sc. courses offered by various Universities. The collection of questions is a boon for students to prepare for entrance examinations and choose higher studies of their choice.

The Computer attached to the department is of maximum use for staff to develop their skills in software programmes. The alumni of the department are now in plum posts in different capacities.

Many of the old students of our department are working as professors, teachers, Headmasters, officers in Banks and in Defense services. Some of our Alumni like, Prof.S.Sirajudeen are now working as the Head of the department of Computer Science. Prof.M.Mohamed Ismail and Prof T.K.Thirumalisamy are working as Lecturers in our Department. Mr. Kalaiarasan is in naval services at Goa. Mr.Gunasekaran is working in State Bank of India. Mr.Narasimhan and Mr. Muthukoneri are working as P.G staff in St. Aloysius School and Cardamom Planters’ Higher Secondary school respectively. One Miss. Rohini M.Sc., M.Phil. M.C.A. is doing research and Miss. Pandeeswari is working as P.G. Assistant in Kombai. Many other former students are also well placed in different capacities. They are the inspiring models to the upcoming generation.

B.Sc Chemistry

With the noble vision of giving higher education in chemistry to the poor and eligible students of this area, the undergraduate course in chemistry was started in the academic year 1963 –’64. Earlier, the subject chemistry was offered at pre–university level. Professor N.S.Krishnasamy was the first head of the department. He was succeeded by Professor N.Venkatesamy. The undergraduate course in chemistry was started during the latter’s tenure and was skillfully conducted by him.

Then the mission was successfully continued and carried out by Prof.R.Subramanian who was succeeded by Prof. T.N.Rengarajan. In his entire career, he devoted whole of his time to offer a standard education to the students. He stood as a role model for students. Really, he had inspired the students and the staff of his department. After the retirement of Prof. T. N.Rangarajan, Prof. S.M.S. Sowkat Ali has taken the headship of the department and looks after departmental affairs with the full co-operation of the staff and students. The whole department is working like ‘one man’ in fulfilling the responsibilities and discharging the duties that is the team spirit of the department.

The Department is having a well-equipped laboratory. This laboratory itself is sufficient for starting post graduate courses and in pursuing research programmes.

The department has placed a request to the management for starting post graduate course in chemistry. This department continuously accomplishes its services to fulfill the vision of our ‘FOUNDER’.

Bachelor of Science (BSc Mathematics)

B.Sc Mathematics

The department of Mathematics was established in the year 1957. Prof. K. Krishnan was the first H.O.D. His long service for twenty years brought name and fame not only to the department but also to the institution. His successor Prof. M. Ramatheertham was dedicated teacher and did his best for the improvement of the department. Mr. S. Umamaheswaran took charge of the department on 27.07.1977 and his devoted service boosted the results and thereby, earned great name to the department. His successor Mr.P.Venkatalu was also a learned mathematician blessed with sincerity and commitment. At Present Prof. K. Badrudheen is the H.O.D. and under his able guidance the department is functioning efficiently with the full support of all members of the department.

Bachelor of Arts in English (BA English)

Bachelor of Arts in English (B.A English)

The establishment of Department of English dates back to the inauguration of the college in 1956. Prof. A.K.G. Nair was at the helm of the faculty, a man of rare language and literary skill. His successor Prof. Abdus Subhan followed his footsteps and added name and fame to the Department. The third stalwart who headed the Department was Mr. Ignatius Absalom. He was also the head of the Institution. Under his expert stewardship, the faculty of English began making rapid progress.

Thus it had earned a reputation of excellence which impressed man like Mr. V.A. Varkey of the American college, Madurai, who later joined our faculty. Soon Mr.Varkey assumed the office of the Head of our Department. He worked with pride and was later elevated to the post of the Principal of the college. Prof. Varkey, a man of hard work added another glorious feather to the crown of the Department, when the college introduced English Major (Language and Literature) in the year 1979.

His successor Mr. M.Abdul Latif prided himself as an old student of his predecessor. Mr. Abdul Latif ‘s services were really enabling and led to a boost in the percentage of results which still continues as a marvel. Prof. G. Regunathan who succeeded Prof. M. Abdul Latif, was a man of dedication. His efforts of motivation culminated in the swelling results which crossed 85%.

Miss. R. Chitra Shobana, a student of literature secured II Rank in the examination of April 1993. Miss. S. Chitra, another student won 16th Rank. The Department of English could boast of these achievements which spate of our hard work and commitment to teaching.

Guided by the proud legacy of the past, the Department of English awaits to meet the challenges that lie ahead in the days to come.

The History Department exists from the inception of the college. Initially, history was taught as one of the papers for pre-university course and as an ancillary paper for B.A., Economics course. B.A. History major was started in the year 1968. Prof. K.Sikkandar, the strong man of the college was the first head of the Department. He served as the principal from 1997-1980 and again from 1988 to 1991. It was under his leadership, our college became one of the well disciplined colleges in Madurai Kamaraj University. His administrative ability laid the foundation for the name and fame of this institution.

Prof. Sikkandar was succeeded by Prof. R. Pandiaraj, the saga , Guru and Saint of our college. He brought a status for our college through his fluency in English language. He was a source of inspiration and instrumental for so many teachers and students to achieve high status in the society.

After the retirement of Prof. R.Pandiaraj, Prof. K. Jeyaram assumed the headship of the Department. He started his career as a school teacher. He was a charismatic personality. He was an erudite scholar and his services to the Department were really great. During his reign, the department conducted a U.G.C sponsored seminar “On Human Rights” which was attended by a number of staff and students from various colleges of Madurai Kamaraj University.

The present Head of the Department is Prof. S.Doraisamy. He is an alumnus of the department. He served as a member of the Academic Council and of Board of Studies of the Madurai Kamaraj University. The Department organizes various inter-collegiate competitions, cultural programmes, seminars, tours and other co-curricular activities.

Our department was elevated as a P.G. Department from 1987-88. B.A. History (vocational) course was started in the year 1999-2000. Our department is facilitating with a good library consisting of valuable books and journals.
Many of our students are highly placed, for example, Mr. M.Sermarajan I.P.S., is at present the I.G., Intelligence Bureau, Chennai. Many of our old students are serving in the revenue, police and other departments.
Our department has been receiving the best department award from our college management continuously for the past ten years for the best results both in U.G. and P.G. Our students have got first ranks and many other ranks in B.A. History and vocational courses at the university level.
Dr. S. Varghese Jeyaraj was awarded Doctorate for his work titled “Zamindari System in Madurai District” in 1994. In the same year Mr. S. Doraisamy got first rank in the M.phil course of the Madurai Kamaraj University. Presently four staff members are pursuing Ph.D., programmes.

Department Economics

The Economics Department is one of the first departments started with the establishment of the college in 1956. The department was first headed by Prof.M. Krishnamoorthy. Professors M. Krishnamoorthy, N. Nainar Mohamed and V.Krishnmoorthy, all former principals of this college were from this department. Besides, the past principal Dr.K.Shahul Hameed also belongs to this department. The first vice-principal Prof. N. Nainar Mohamed (1990-91) and the second vice-principal Prof.K.M. Syed Kalai(1991-98) were staff members of the department. The former principal Prof.N.Nainar Mohamed is now working as the principal of Syed Hameedia College of Arts and Science, Keelakarai.

The former principal Prof. V.Krishnamoorthy and the former Head of the Department Prof.M.Abdul Rahman contributed their services towards the development of the department. Prof. V.Krishnamoorthy is a notable social activist and is presently the Secretary of “Cumbum Valley Periyar Aayacut Farmers’ Association”, while the latter is a well known orator in Tamil Nadu and among the Tamil-speaking people living in Singapore, Malaysia and Middle East.

At present G.Ramanan is working as the Head of the Department. He, along with a team of dedicated staff members, is taking every effort to improve academic performance of the students. Further, the staff of the department also improve their academic career by attending Orientation and Refresher courses. They encourage the students to present papers in seminars, and also help them in preparing for the competitive examinations and in getting admissions in post graduate courses in other colleges / universities.
