The Agricultural College and Research Institute is on the National Highway (NH) 7A at a distance of 20 Kilometres from Tirunelveli Railway Junction and 36 Kilometers from Thoothukudi. The college is at Killikulam village- 2 kilometers from Vallanadu. The college was established in 1984 as the third constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. During the early days of inception, the college was functioning in a rented building of MDT Hindu College, Vannarappettai in Tirunelveli. The acquisition of lands and buildings from the State Seed Farm, Killikulam resulted in the shifting of educational activities to Killikulam during 1986-'87. Consequent on the completion of hostel buildings, all academic activities of B. Sc (Ag) programme were shifted to Killikulam campus from 01.11.1989 onwards. The college was Upgraded as Agricultural College & Research Institute in 1989 to cater to the needs of farming community of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts. Postgraduate programmes- M.Sc (Ag) in Plant Breeding and Genetics, Agronomy, Soil Science, Agricultural Entomology and Plant Pathology were started in the year 1990. AC&RI, Killikulam secured the Best College Award for the year 2002. The campus of AC&RI, Killikulam is the largest campus in TNAU with an area of 338.09 hectare and has well established water resources of 2.5 cusses of surface water through river pumping from Maruthur East channel of Tambiraparani Irrigation System, from a non-system Killikulam tank which gets its water supply through run-off from the foot hills of the Vallanadu Hills, and through underground resource from thirteen open and 4 bore wells. The AC&RI, Killikulam was established with the following objectives
Increasing the trained manpower in agriculture through better education.
Addressing the zonal problems in crop improvement, production and protection of field and horticultural crops and developing suitable technologies through research programmes.
Dissemination of the technologies for information and adoption by the farming community of the zone.
Developing technologies for sustaining the production of wastelands of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.
