It was the year 1998, the family members of Late Sri S.M. Arumugam Chettiar decided to continue the Charity works already done by him to mark his 25th Anniversary Year.

Late Sri S.M. Arumugam Chettiar was well known to the people in an around Dharmapuri District. People gave respect to him by calling him as Thiru. Chettiar for his remarkable service to the poor people. On the first Republic Day of India he dedicated a bridge for public at his own Cost across Sanathakumara Nathi Which connects between Gollahalli Village and Dharmapuri Town. He dugged serveral Wells for the purpose of Drinking Water in Prominent Places for the use of the Public and cattle in Dharmapuri Town. He renovated the ancient Adhiyaman’s Kottai Koil temple-along with other persons. He contributed liberally to the Panchayat Free Maternity hospital in Dharmapuri, now it is called as Annai Kasthuriba Free Maternity Hospital located near New Bus Stand.

He initiated number of Pooja Kattallai’s at Various temples in Dharmapuri. He donated Ten Acres of his own Land to Vinobhav’s Boothana Iyakkam. He was honored by the British Government.

The above Noble works of Late Sri S.M. Arumugam Chettiar, Inspired the members of the family under the Leadership of Sri S.M.A Venkatesan formed the Trust in the name of his Father namely Sri S M Arumugam Chettiar Educational and Charitable Trust with an aim to give Education for the Poor people at Low cost with High Quality. Hence S. M. Arumugam Polytechnic College was Established in the year 1998 – 99.
