Located in Chennai (formerly Madras) India, the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) is the first management school of its kind to be established in this part of the world. The Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI), a premier Indian financial institution and the House of Kotharis, a leading business house of south India were the joint sponsors of this academic endeavour. It was established in October 1970 as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. IFMR in its third decade of academic initiatives, continues to be a leader in Financial Management Education, Research and Consultancy. The Academy for Management Excellence (ACME), founded in 1991 as an offshoot of IFMR, is a new experiment in management education in India. ACME was started in anticipation of the changing demands of executive education, consequent to the opening up of the Indian economy. It aimed squarely, therefore, at the challenging task of "Retooling the Indian manager for global competitiveness". From the Director's Desk IFMR/ACME offer customised programmes in general, financial and information technology management to cater to the specific needs of the organisation. Executives of more than 100 organisations have been trained by IFMR/ACME. These programmes are offered after an in-depth study of the concerned organisations to identify the specific training needs.
