SMIMS was started in 2001, with its first batch of MBBS students joining on 10 October, 2001. SMIMS was started as a joint venture between Sikkim government and Manipal group.

Apart from MBBS, the college also awards degrees in paramedical courses like BPT., MSC., BSC nursing and DMLT in medical fields. The 1st first batch consisted of 100 students, which however came down to 50 from the 4th batch. It has now been recognised by the Medical Council of India. DNB in Obstetrics and Gynecology (a PG Course) The Central Referral Hospital and Sir Tashi Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospitals are utilize for clinical training/teaching.

There are 5 (five) lecture halls in the CRH building and 4 (four) in the new College building. There is an auditorium in the new College building, with a sitting capacity of approximately 750 audience

Institute : Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical sciences, located at Tadong, Gangtok is a constituent college of the Sikkim Manipal University. It offers M.B.B.S, Nursing, and Physiothisapy courses, Masters program in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy, and also Diploma courses in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics and surgery. The institute is associated with the Central Referral Hospital, Tadong and Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Hospital, Gangtok which offer clinical training opportunities to students.

Hospital: At present, Central Referral Hospital has 400 beds, which will be enhanced to 500 beds. It is a 9-storeyed tertiary care center, housing 21 special specialities, 8 operation theatres, and all state of the art medical equipments. The hospital organizes Health camps in the remote interiors of the state, providing commutation facilities to make health services accessible to even the most periphisal villages. The treatment for the under privileged is free, as is the stay in the hospital.

Special Characteristics of the Medical school’s Educational Program: S.M.I.M.S offers individual attention to all students, where all students are allotted to “Teacher -Guardians” who not only monitor the academic progress, but also guide and counsel them. Lectures are held in halls equipped with modern audio-visual teaching aids. Students are provided with first hand clinical experience and ward exposure, starting from the second year of medical schooling. A compulsory Internship after completing four and a half years of the course duration trains the student in clinical activities. The students are assigned duties and work as groups in shifts. It is mandatory to complete three months of posting in the rural health centers, which provides the students with opportunity for community service.

Hospital Presently the Central Referral Hospital has 500 beds. It is a nine storeyed building with a floor space of more than 3,00,000 sq. ft. The hospital has 21 specialties, 8 operation theatres and state-of-the-art medical equipment.

College The college is fully equipped but under-staffed. Pre clinical years are mostly taught by non-doctor faculty consisting of fresh M.Sc. graduates from SMIMS itself. The college is housed in an imposing building with all modern facilities All non clinical and clinical Departments are fully operational.

Lecture hall There are 4 lecture halls equipped with modern audio-visual teaching aids.

Laboratories and Dissection hall There are 9 Laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment. Although microscopes in labs are outdated and in bad condition especially in microbiology department. The dissection hall is large enough for 150 students to work simultaneously.

Computers All departments are provided with computers. Internet facilities are available in the college and central library.

Library and reading rooms The library has 8000 text and reference books and subscribes to 100 National and International journals. The library has just 2-3 copies of regular course textbooks which makes it difficult for students to find books as they're so less in number.Internet and Medline facilities are available for students and faculty.

Hostel The Institute is fully residential. All undergraduate students are required to stay in the hostel. Only permanent local residents are exempted. The nine storeyed building houses 200 rooms. Each room is furnished with a study table, a chair, a cupboard/shelf for each student. Every room has an attached toilet, service area and hot water facility. An exclusive dining hall is also housed in the hostel building. The mess provides vegetarian / non-vegetarian meals which are not atall palatble and no improvement is done inspite of repeated complaints as college is more interested in profit making than providing students with proper meal. Dining in the mess is compulsory for all inmates of the hostel. The students of first year will be provided with 3 seated rooms

Communication No such facility operates for ISD/STD in the campus.

Bank Canara Bank operates an extension counter on campus. There is also a UTI Bank with ATM facility nearby.

Entertainment The University organizes movie shows at frequent intervals in the fully equipped auditorium.

Sports Facilities for Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Carom and Chess are available. ALthough all these facilities are right in middle of girl's hostel which makes hostel noisiest place due to constant howling and shouting by over enthusiastic players. This also hampers privacy of girl's hostel apart from untimely, unchecked tresspassing by male workers and guards throughout the day in girl's hostel. The college also has an active cricket team. Although, college doesn't have any coach or guide for sports.

Medicare (medical insurance) All students are covered by the Medical Insurance Scheme (Medicare) provided by the Institute. There is a separate ward reserved for students at the Central Referral Hospital (CRH).

Teacher guardian scheme Under this scheme, each student is allotted a specific teacher guardian who provides emotional support, monitors academic performance, provides necessary guidance to his/her ward and communicates all such details regularly to the parents of the student. This scheme has received tremendous support from students and parents alike.
