Sikkim is located in the Himalayan Mountains. The largest institution in the state is the Sikkim Manipal University of Technological Sciences, which offers higher education in engineering, medicine and management. It also provides various distance education programs in diverse fields. Sikkim has two state-run polytechnical schools, the Advanced Technical Training Centre (ATTC) and the Centre for Computers and Communication Technology (CCCT), offering diploma courses in various branches of engineering.

National Institute Of Technology, Sikkim (NIT Sikkim) is an institute of national importance for studying engineering. The institute was established in 2010 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Sikkim University, Gangtok is one of the central university of the state. Sikkim University offers general courses in Humanities, Physical Life Sciences, Forestry and specialized programmes in ethnic history, mountain studies, border studies, hill music and cultures. Other private universities in the state are Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Science; ICFAI University; EIILM University.
