The Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu, was founded in the year 1911 and the very first SSLC examination was also held in the same year. The main aim of the board is to conduct the Class 10th and 12th examinations every year. Besides that, the board is also responsible for the distribution of mark sheets, admit cards, publishing of results etc. It also provides affiliations to private and government schools in the TN state.
