Dairy and Food : The Immense Potential
Dairy and Food industries playa dynamic role in India's agro-based economy. India is the numero uno milk producer and ranks 2nd in food production in the world, even at the present low levels of productivity ascribable to diverse agro-c1imatic conditions and disorganized human resources. These two sectors are flourishing at a tremendous pace and fusi ng together are generati ng jobs to the extent of 2.5 lakh per year.

Gujarat is a leading manufacturer/producer of milk & milk products. The state has the largest network of milk co-operative societies contributing about 671akh liters of milk per day. The state of Gujarat has a unique agro climatic condition. progressive and hard working farmers produce wide agricultural produces. The major crops include rice, wheat, maize, oilseeds, cotton, fruits and vegetables and spices.

Dairy industry, now a highly specialized field today involves production, procurement, storage, processing and distribution of dairy products. There are 13 cooperative and 15 private dairies in the state and yet, to cater to the stupendous needs of the speedily growing dairy industry, there is only one 'Dairy Science' college in the state. The supply of technical personnel, 30-35% of which leave the state for higher studies, is very small in comparison to the demand.

Likewise, with the introduction of modern technology in the production and processing of food produce and no dearth of demand for packaged and processed foods in the market, there is a premium on food technologists who are key players in today's age of 'Fast Foods'. The technology embraces all types offood fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, milk, cereals, spices, tea, coffee, etc. Again, this highlights the growing need of technical people (both in terms of engineering and maintaining product quality) which is hindered by the lack of quality institutions in the state.

The amalgamation of Expertise in both Dairy and Food Technology (and emphasis on food quality assurance) guarantees not only better handling of the dairy and food industry, but also encourages consistent growth and innovation. Not only will this reduce the deficiency of Dairy & Food Technologists in the state but, with their collective expertise and incessant energy, also take this industry and academia to a whole new dimension of growth, prosperity and achievement second to none.
