Sarder Patel Medical College, Bikaner is a prestigious medical college recognised by The Medical Council Of India (MCI) located in Bikaner in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was established in 1959 and was Rajasthan's second Medical college. It was inaugrated by the former prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.It is considered the best medical college in Rajasthan in terms of its academic performance.It has been producing successful doctors and specialists in its 50 years of existence. The group of hospitals attached to it provide ample scope for interactions with the patients and learning from them. The medical students graduating from this medical college have earned name and fame in India.The faculty is highly experienced and they impart their clinical skills to their students in the best possible ways they can. The college is fully funded by the Govt. of rajasthan and it provides all required facilities to the students whenever needed. The Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC) is a renowned medical institution situated in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The college was established in 1959 and is considered as the second Medical College in Rajasthan. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Mohan Lal Sukhadia and it was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The college was initially known as the Bikaner Medical College and later, the State Government of Rajasthan decided to name the college after Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel.
Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner, Rajasthan During the earlier years, from July 1959 to January 1964, the Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC), Bikaner, Rajasthan conducted its activities in the building of War Hospital No.1 that later became teachers` training college. The college was shifted to its present building in the early part of 1964 and it got recognition from the Medical Council of India in the same year. The first batch of students of this college appeared in the final year of MBBS in 1964, as well. The SPMC got recognition for its courses like M.D. in Medicine, Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology) and M.S. in General Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology, in January 1967. The college was recognized for M.S. in Ophthalmology in July 1967 and soon after for M.D. in Pediatrics and M.S. in ENT Diseases. The M.S. in Orthopedic course of the college got recognized in 1970.
The Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC), Bikaner, Rajasthan established its Coronary Care Unit in 1975-76. This was the first coronary care unit in Rajasthan. The Anesthesia Department of the college got the ABL-II machine for the first time in 1978 for blood gas analysis. Many facilities like E.E.G., E.M.G, Haemodialysis, Echocardiography, Tread mill test, Endoscopies and Respiratory care units were also started during the 1980s. The college has 100 seats for the MBBS courses and 63 seats for the post graduate students. The year 1964 was a landmark year in the college's history when it finally earned the approval of the Medical Council of India. The students belonging to the departments of Pathology, Pharmacology, Medicine and Physiology became eligible for the M.D. Course while General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology students were entitled to the M.S. Degree.
After this milestone achievement, there was no looking back for the medical college. The Opthalmology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics and E.N.T disease departments were sanctioned soon after. This was followed by the establishment of a coronary unit and the infrastructure of the anesthesia department was spruced up by the addition of new and modern equipments. The college reached the pinnacle of success, development and medical glory with the addition of the state of the art Electrocardiography, Dialysis, E.E.G., E.M.G., Endoscopy, Tread mill test and Respiratory care units.
