Mehr Chand Polytechnic College was established way back in 1954 in the sacred and sweet memory of Lala Mehr Chand Ji under the aegis of DAV College Managing Committee , New Delhi. It is privately managed , Govt. Aided Institution affiliated to Punjab State Board of Tech. Edu. and Indl. Trg. Chandigarh. It has completed 50 years of dedicated service to the Nation and has also celebrated its " GOLDEN JUBILEE". During the year 2002-2003, this Polytechnic was adjudged as " Best Polytechnic" in Punjab by National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh , on account of Institute's excellent performance in all the sphere i.e. academic, sports and co-curricular activities.

It has always been under the guidance of dynamic Principals like Sarvshree Chanchal Dass, Y.P. Mayar , S.K. Arora , Dr. S.K. Sachdeva , B.L. Handoo, C.L. Kochar, R.K. Dhawan and M.L. Ohri - all were men of vast learning , profound wisdom and indomitable spirit.

At present , the reins of this institute are in the hands of Sh. S.K. Sahdev, who is a man of calm and cool temperament with unbiased and perfectly impartial outlook on life , qualities of head & heart and this quality has also helped him to achieve the " BEST POLYTECHNIC TEACHER AWARD IN PUNJAB FOR THE YEAR 2004" by Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), New Delhi - the only recognized body related to technical education in India for his distinguished and meritorious contribution in the field of Technical Education, when he was occupying the position of Head Electrical Engg. Deppt. of this Institute. Under his dynamic leadership, this polytechnic progressing by leaps and bounds in all the sphere.This polytechnic is offering Three Years Diploma level Engg. Courses in Civil , Electrical , Mechanical , Electronics & communication, Computer Enggg. and Two years Diploma in Pharmacy.

it is a matter of great pride that the four programs i.e. diploma in Civil , Mechanical , Electronics & Communication and Electrical Engg. have been accredited for three years , effective from 29-06-06 ny National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of AICTE , New Delhi. With this accreditation , the institution has now become the first and the only institution in the State of Punjab, which has been accredited in four programs. The Training and placements cell of this institute is also playing a significant role for the placement of students of all the programs in the prestigious and renowned organizations spread all over India. This Institute is also running " Community Polytechnic Wing " , which is imparting Technical Training to rural youth, creating awareness regarding the latest technology and providing technical and support services to rural masses.
