    Guru Nanak Dev University was established at Amritsar on November 24, 1969 under an Act to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Carefully nurtured by illustrious academicians as administrators it has created a place of pride for itself on the academic map of India, and is striving to equip the students to face the challenges of 21st century. The motto of the University as engraved on its emblem (Guru’s wisdom illumines all) speaks of the vision and idealism for which the university stands.

    Spread over a stretch of 500 acres towards the west of the city, Guru Nanak Dev University presents a picture of modern architecture. Traditional red brick geometrical blocks represent its regard time-honoured values and commitment to scientific advancement. The university today boasts of 39 full-fledged academic departments, two regional campuses at Jalandhar and Gurdaspur, two constituent colleges and a score of support service departments besides several administrative offices.

    In addition to its obligatory pursuit of the spread and propagation of Punjabi language and Guru Nanak Studies, the University in its initial years laid an equal emphasis on the development of humanities and basic sciences. In recent years it has diversified in a big way its programmes into applied sciences making it one of the distinguished Centres of industry related and need based job oriented programmes. It is one of the few universities in country, which have attempted to restructure the syllabi in the light of reports submitted by UGC expert committees.

    Very early on, it decided to restructure its syllabi on the basis of recommendations made in the reports of the Curriculum Development Centres (1988) and the process is continuing since then. Admission to courses at all levels is made strictly on the basis of National, State and University level entrance tests.
    Being an affiliating university, it performs the parenting role of directing and monitoring the academic programmes of 102 colleges located in five districts.

    Over the years, the university has built up an excellent academic infrastructure in the form of a well stocked computerised library, state-of-the art laboratories, Academic Staff College, All India Services Training centre, Instrumentation Centre, Physiotherapy Centre, Language Lab., Multimedia Centre, Botanical Garden with Green House, Computer Centre, 24 hours Internet facility, Placement Unit etc. To promote research among its faculty, almost all the departments have been provided with independent computer facilities and department libraries.

    In addition to the academics, the University has also created facilities for recreation and all round development of its students and faculty in the form of Department of youth services, National Service Scheme, Public Relations Department, a 900 seat all purpose auditorium, half a dozen seminar and conference halls, a modern hi-tech sports complex, sports hostel, open air theatre, faculty club, health centre, students centre, day care centre, two separate holiday homes at Dalhousie for teachers and students, working women hostel along with on-campus residential facilities for a large number of students, teachers and administrative staff.

    Five-Star NAAC Accreditation
    The University is the first in North India to get assessed from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and got the highest Five Star Level Status. The UGC has also selected this university for Centre of Excellence in Sports Sciences keeping in view of its commendable achievements in the field of sports.
