In one of the remote corners of the Nation, in the KBK District of Odisha, Predominantly inhabited by socially, economically & educationally weaker and backward section of population, attracted world’s attention and found an important place in the geographical map of the world with the launching of UIHEP in the late 1970’s, is not other than Jaipatna, 80 K.M. away from the District head-quarter, Bhawanipatna, in Kalahandi district, located on the foot-hill of Eastern-ghat mountain range, altogether endowed with scenic beauty & bounty of water, forest, hills & other natural resources., The benevolent local people realizing the deficit of an institution for higher studies for which the vulnerable section of the local community specifically girl child and SC/ST/OBC students who cannot afford the cost of higher education and join the swelling army of the drop outs, deeply thought for establishing a higher Educational institution for a qualitative goal at a lower social and economic cost at their door steps. The dream got a shape at the hands of the local elites & found expression in the form of Indravati Degree Mahavidyalaya, Jaipatna, Kalahandi, in the year 1989. Facilitating wards of U.I.P. employees, Mukhiguda for higher education was also considered an important objective of this degree college. The college began with 35 number of students in Arts only and later on in 1992 Science stream was opened with 39 number of students. Now the college runs with 641 students., Initially started with an intake capacity of 128 seats in +3 Arts, the college added a feather to its cap by introducing +3 Science, with 64 seats in 1992, which stood as the 2nd Science college at Degree level in the entire district of Kalahandi., The college is registered under the Society Registration Act 1860 in April 1991. Permanent concurrence & Affiliation have been accorded by Govt. of Odisha and Sambalpur University respectively since 2004. At present the college has 12 nos. of teaching staff & 23 nos. of non-teaching staff, students enrollment has bounced to 641 from 35 in 1989-90. The college moved a step forward as it got registered under U.G.C. Act 1956, vide clauses 2 (f) & 12 (b) w.e.f. 2008 & 2013 respectively. The college entered in to Grant-in-aid fold of Govt. of Odisha as per 2009 Grant-in-aid order 1994 and a major chunk of the staff are in receipt of block grant as per 2009 G-I-A order. Still some are under management fold. IGNOU study centre started functioning since 2005., With the assistance of the U.G.C , financial assistance of Govt. of Odisha & other organizations, the process is on to modernize its system of education & administration putting all activities “online”., As per U.G.C. norms the college is striving strenuously for NAAC accreditation with all positive thoughts & actions. The Principal, staff, students & other related authorities & local elites are involved in the process.
