The Seng Khasi College was established as the first of its kind since the emergence of the State of Meghalaya in 1972, with Shri. A.S.Khongphai as its First President and Shri R.Diengdoh as its First Secretary, Seng Khasi College was formally inaugurated on August 28, 1973. The College, which began as an Evening College with 34 students in its roll, initially functioned from Seng Khasi Hall, Mawkhar. The College was permitted to start Pre University Classes by the Guahati University in July 1973. Subsequently, the College was granted provisional affiliation to carry on with pre-University Classes in Arts stream in October 1973. Since that humble beginning, the College has come a long way, growing from strength to strength, to its present position in which the College caters to the academic requirement of about Two Thousand Students. The College was offered Adhoc grant-in-aid by the Government of Meghalaya in 1974. It received provisional affiliation from NEHU to start Degree Classes in 1976. In 1980 the Government of Meghalaya then extended the benefit of a Time Scale to the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff of the College under the cover of Adhoc grant-in-aid. The College commenced with Day Section Classes in 1983 and now operates in two shifts:- Morning and Day. In 1987 Seng Khasi College was accorded permanent affiliation by the North Eastern Hills University, Shillong. In 2010 Seng Khasi College was registered under the Meghalaya Societies Registration Act – XII of 1983 and in the very same year the College got recognition under section 2 f and 12 B of the UGC Act, 1956 and the College is eligible to receive Central Assistance Under Section 12 B of the UGC Act. The College, currently offering Class XI/XII Arts and Commerce streams and both Honours and General Courses at Degree level in the Arts and Commerce Streams, is now known for its academic credentials. Due recognition is given to untiring effort of a band of dedicated teachers, who, braving all odds, have done and are still doing their best to maintain and further improve the quality of education imparted by the institution.
Currently, the College receives financial aid from the Government of Meghalaya under the cover of Deficit grants-in-aid system of financial support extended to the various academic institutions of the state. Sometime ago, the College has been registered with the UGC and consequently, the College has been able to avail of some financial assistance granted by the UGC. The College has been successful in maintaining a fairly good academic standard if viewed in the light of the College result in the Various Board/University examinations. There is no denying that despite a few success as here and there, we still have to do a lot more to fulfil the cherished desire of the Founding Fathers of this institution. We can march towards the goal with the active participation and co-operation of all and from the lessons learnt from the experiences of the past. We shall remain resolute in our stand, and contribute our strength to keep up and foster a further growth of the institute, so that someday in the near future, we will be able to make this institution one of the premier institutes of the region. “Education”, said Aristotle, “is the creation of sound mind and a sound body... It develops man’s faculty especially in the mind so that he may become able to contemplate the supreme truth, goodness and beauty of which consists the essentials of perfect happiness.” It is such education that we too are dreaming for this College. By becoming ‘able’ to deliver the much needed value oriented education, we would live up to the need of the hour. In our endeavour to achieve, through the spread of a value loaded education, the just and co-operative social order, we hope we shall continue to enjoy your support and encouragement.
