About College Of Teacher Education PGT, Shillong

The College of Teacher Education PGT, also known by its former nomenclature of PGT – Post Graduate Training College is located in the heart of Shillong.

The seed of this Teacher Training College at Shillong was sown during the Centenary year of Swami Vivekananda 1963, to commemorate the centenary of the great teacher in a befitting manner. The College is one of the first teacher education institutions in Shillong, the then capital of undivided Assam, catering specifically to teacher training in the State. It came into existence on 19th March, 1964.

The Institution owes much of its existence to the Jail Road Boys’ High School, which generously offered the use of its premises and nurtured it for over a decade till it acquired its own premises. Shri S. C. Rajkhowa, the then DPI, Government of Assam, allowed the Post Graduate Training College special dispensation to commence functioning with part-time staff including the Principal as an interim arrangement.

In 1986, the Government of Meghalaya brought the College under the purview of the Deficit grant-in-aid system.

The College has been conferred recognition by the National Council of Teacher Education NCTE under Section 14 of NCTE Act F. No. 2799 12 dated 11.02.1997 with an intake of 80 students. The College was then granted recognition to run the B.Ed. Course of one year duration with a total intake of 100 students from the academic session 2003-2004 vide ERC order no. ERC/7-29/2002/4014, Dt. 12.11.2012.

In compliance with the New Regulation 2014, the College of Teacher Education PGT was granted recognition for conducting B.Ed. Programme of two years duration with an annual intake of 50 Students for one basic unit from the academic session 2015-16 vide ERC no. F.ERC/NCTE/ERCAPE00180/B.Ed. Revised Order /2015/31779 Dt. 20.05.2015.

At present, the College is conducting the B.Ed. course of two years duration for one basic unit only with an annual intake of 50 students.
