The G.S. College of Commerce & Economics, Jabalpur is the premier institution of higher commerce education in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Shiksha Mandal, Wardha, the renowned national educational society, established the first Commerce College in the old Central Provinces and Berar at Wardha with the help of a gracious donation from (late) Seth Govindramji Seksaria in 1942. Another Commerce College was established in Nagpur in 1945. In order to meet the growing demand of higher education in Commerce in the Mahakaushal region of the state, the present G.S. College of Commerce & Economics, was established in Jabalpur in 1948 by the active efforts of Shiksha Mandal's then Chairman (late) Acharya Shriman Narayanji, noted Gandhian economist and Member, Planning Commission and a generous donation of Rs. One Lakh from the Seksaria Trust.

Ever since its establishment, the College has moved from strength to strength. Starting with the admission of merely 82 students in 1948, the College presently imparts Commerce education to more than 3000 students annually through both Hindi and English medium. The College provides education leading to B.Com, M.Com, and M.A. (Eco.) degrees of the R.D. University, Jabalpur.
The Centre For Management Studies, earlier known as the Centre for Advanced Studies & Research has been established to inculcate awareness and interest for advanced studies & research among the post graduate students of the college. The Centre arranges seminars, symposia & debates from time to time on various live issues related to the structure and problems of the national economy. The Centre provides adequate facilities and guidance to the post-graduate students in the preparation of research papers which form part of their curriculum. The Centre has been conducting two employment oriented postgraduate Diploma Courses from the academic session of 1994-95 namely The Centre launched a fulltime P.G. degree course namely Master of Human Resources Administration from 1999-2000 sessions. The Centre is also holding foundation course classes of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Dr. R.K. Agrawal is the courses Director.
