The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) is established under the Science and Technology policy adopted by the Government of Kerala as an autonomous institution to undertake research in areas like forestry, biodiversity etc., that are vital to the development of Kerala State. The Institute was registered as a society on 3rd July 1975 under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act, 1955. The institution fulfills number of economic, social and environmental objectives set by the Government

LOCATION KFRI is strategically located in the midst of a tropical forest at Peechi about 20km East of Trichur, in Central Kerala, India. The main campus extends over an area of 28 ha., part of the picturesque reserve forest of the Peechi Forest Range. The Institute has two sub-Centres- one at Nilambur in North Kerala and the other at Velupadam, Palapilly in Trichur District. Established in 1975, the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) is an institution of the Government of Kerala under its Science and Technology Department. The Institute is dedicated to research in tropical forestry, environment and biodiversity conservation. In 2003, when the State owned R & D institutions were re-organized to constitute the Kerala State Council for Science and Technology (KSCSTE), KFRI also became part of the latter. The Institute is managed by a Management Committee (MC) chaired by the Director. The Research Council (RC) comprising eminent scientists of the country oversees and assists in developing appropriate research policies; it also monitors the quality of research undertaken by the Institute.

The vision of KFRI is to function as a Center of Excellence in tropical forestry and to provide scientific support to the State and its people on matters related to forestry, with particular emphasis on conservation, sustainable utilization and scientific management of natural resources. In order to fulfill this vision the Institute conducts multidisciplinary research, provides technical advice to practical problems, and disseminates information to the various stakeholders, end users and the public. The Main Campus of KFRI is situated at Peechi, a sylvan location situated 20 km east of Thrissur. It is well connected by rail and road. Nearest Airports are Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery (COK, 65 km from Peechi) and the Coimbatore Airport (CJB, 115 km from Peechi) in Tamil Nadu. The Institute also has a Subcenter at Nilambur, 140 km north of Peechi, a Field Research Station at Velupadam, 36 km south of Peechi and two field units situated at Kottappara, 90 km south of Peechi, and Devikulam, located 195 km south from Peechi.

The Central Instrumentation Unit (CIU) is a common facility providing sophisticated equipment facilities to the scientists. Other research facilitation units in the Institute include a Herbarium, a Xylarium, an Arboretum, a Canetum, a Bambusetum, an Orchidarium, a Forest Seed Center in the main campus at Peechi. A Bioresources Nature Park and a Teak Museum at the Nilambur Subcenter, and an Arboretum of Evergreen Trees at Velupadam are the other supportive units.

The general modality for implementation of research in the Institute is through time-bound research projects. The Institute functions on annual grant-in-aid derived from the Government of Kerala. It also generates finance for the conduct of various research programmes from other national and international funding agencies such as Kerala Forest Department (KFD), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF), National Medicinal Plant Board (NMPB), National Bamboo Mission (NMB), Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Darwin Initiative (UK), European Union (EU), etc.

Another activity of the Institute is its training and extension programmes. Round the year organized training programmes serve to impart expertise to the staff of the Forest Department and other end users. The Institute also serves as the major technical advisory wing of the Forest Department; it also offers technical advice to various Departments of the Government on environmental impact assessment, resource management and resource utilization.

Fifty-eight qualified research scientists specialized in various subjects are involved in the conduct of the research programmes. The scientists are supported by temporary staff appointed in the projects. KFRI is attached to the FRI University and a number of the research staff working in time bound projects get the opportunity for doing their Ph.D. Scientists also act as guides for M.Phil. dissertation works.

The website provides details on the various Programme Divisions, the supporting facilities, important research areas, academic programmes, and publications. It also provides various news items of current importance such as job opportunities, on-going and forthcoming events and tender notices.
