The Architecture Department became a part of the prestigious institution of the College Of Engineering in 1964 under the able headship of the late Prof. J.C. Alexander who was the then Chief Architect and Town Planner of the Public Works Department in Kerala and a part time faculty was formed from among the PWD staff. A full time faculty was appointed with Professor T. Oommen as the first full time head. In 1976, the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) Council visited the Department for the first time, and according to their recommendations the course was recognized by the IIA. The first PhD was awarded in 1995 to Dr. Ashalatha Thampuran. The year 1989 saw the starting of a new post- graduate course in Housing. This course was modified in late 1998 to the present M. Planning (housing) course.
Initially, the department was accomodated within the framework of the Engineering College, but in the 1990s, it moved into its present location - its own independent building. The Department covers an area of 0.45 hectares. Presently, the department is headed by Prof. K. Mariamma. The goal of the department has been to train architectural personnel to meet the demands of industry at a global level. To ensure this , the department has been blessed with a highly qualified and committed staff who have a wide range of specialization from different universities.
Location - The Department of Architecture, College of Engineering , Trivandrum is set on the outskirts of the city of Thiruvananthapuram (formerly called Trivandrum) ,the administrative capital of the state of Kerala, a southern state of India. The Department of Architecture occupies a single building within the lush green campus.
Accreditation - The Department of Architecture, College of Engineering, Trivandrum became the first school of architecture in India to be accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) earlier this year in April. The department was consequently awarded an NBA grade of B. The accreditation grade awarded to the department is unique to the B. Arch degree course and does not imply a similar grade for all the courses offered by the department. The grading is valid for a period of 5 years , effective from May 1, 2000.
