The Centre for Development Studies (CDS) is a premier social science research institution established in 1971. Its main objective is to promote research, teaching and training in disciplines relevant to development. Over the years it has established a tradition of interdisciplinary research on development problems in India. The research areas include fisheries, agriculture, industry, poverty, health, nutrition,education, gender and environment. CDS is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, for its M.Phil. Programme in Applied Economics, Ph.D. Programme in Economics and Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Population and Sustainable Development. It is also a recognised institution for doctoral research registered under the University of Kerala, India. There is a regular flow of scholars from other centres in India and abroad. Together with a faculty of varied interests, national and international research collaborations, and a library of extensive of collection of development literature, the Centre's ambience is conducive for high quality research and doctoral studies. The core financial support to the Centre comes from the Government of Kerala and the Indian Council of Social Science Research. Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Planning Commission have instituted endowment units for research in selected areas at CDS.
