List of facilities available at Indian Institute of Spices Research IISR, Kozhikode for students.

The IISR library (NICS) provides support to research and development work of the Institute by acquiring global scientific literature, organizing them for ease of use and better access. It also caters to the needs of the scholarly community of other institutes, universities and organizations. The period under report witnessed the transition of the library from a conventional to an electronic one by embarking upon library automation, subscription of e journals, offline and online databases, Internet connectivity etc. The library was shifted to a new building with excellent digital accessibility and storage facility.
he different sophisticated instruments are pooled in centralized laboratories for efficient usage and monitoring. Which includes, Centralized Molecular Biology facility: A centralized laboratory for Molecular Biology was developed in the Division of Crop Improvement & Biotechnology during the reporting period. Equipments such as PCR systems, electrophoresis units, gel documentation systems, particle delivery system, transilluminators, Protein Profile Probe, Cryo- preservation unit etc. are housed in this laboratory. Centralized Biochemistry laboratory: For the quality evaluation, studies on nutraceuticals, plant physiology and biochemical studies another centralized facility was created. The facilities available include HPLC, gas chromatograph, HPTLC, refractometer, moisture analyzer, Cylotec sample mill, freeze drier, vacuum concentrator, chlorophyll flurometer, plant canopy analyzer, Photosynthetic system, plant growth chamber etc. Centralized Soil Chemistry lab: A state of art of Soil Chemistry lab has been developed for soil and nutrient profile studies. Some of the advanced equipments of this lab are atomic absorption spectrophotometer, nitrogen analyzer, ion meter etc. Centralized Plant Protection lab: An advanced Plant Protection lab with different types of microscopes with image analyzing systems, thermal cyclers, deep freezers, ultra centrifuges, Elisa reader with washer & printer, incubated shakers, walk in cold room etc. was developed. GCMS facility: To facilitate the finger printing of aroma compounds in spices an exclusive GCMS facility with all the latest libraries was created. Biocontrol laboratory: A modern biocontrol laboratory for mass multiplicaton of biocontrol agents and natural enemies was established with fermentors, shakers etc.
Sports facilities are available in the campus. Annual Sports event is held in the month of December in every year
Good transportation facilities for its students, staff members and visiting guests.
Proper healthcare arrangements are done by college. Proper Medical Facilities are available
24-hours internet access for all. Wi-Fi for all
In order to provide for the establishment of an effective system for protection of plant varieties, the rights of farmers and plant breeders and to encourage the development of new varieties of plants it has been considered necessary to recognize and protect the rights of the farmers in respect of their contribution made at any time in conserving, improving and making available plant genetic resources for the development of the new plant varieties. Moreover to accelerate agricultural development, it is necessary to protect plants breeders rights to stimulate investment for research and development for the development of new plant varieties. For this such varieties should be tested for their distinctiveness, uniqueness and stability (DUS). To facilitate this, a DUS testing Centre has been established at IISR by the PPV&FR Authority, New Delhi.
The Bioinformatics Centre was established at the Institute as a sub- centre under the BTIS network. The Centre has a dedicated Internet connectivity (1 mbps), necessary hardware and software resources to initiate and support the Spice Bioinformatics/Biotechnology programmes. An advanced IT infrastructure with high end servers, routers, switches and wired and wireless LAN was built up during this period. A Bioinformatics Library with more than 100 reference books, journals, databases etc. was also set up. A round the clock browsing facility, SpicE- Lab, is also made available for the benefit of students and research fellows. Active collaboration exists with nearby BTISNet centres, especially with the centre at CPCRI, Kasaragod in organizing Bioinformatics trainings and sharing of resources. The Centre also collaborates with NIT, Kozhikode for conducting a Bioinformatics course for M.Tech. students. Currently 19 students are attending this course. Bioinformatics students doing their M.Sc. in other institutions are allowed to carry out their project work in the institute. The Centre collaborated with DOEACC Centre, Kozhikode in conducting an O level course in Bioinformatics. The Centre has also initiated action on coordinating Agri- bioinformatics efforts in the country by organizing workshops and by developing an Agri- Informatics portal.
The GIS Laboratory provides Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing, and 3D Modeling . The GIS studies done at IISR, Kozhikode has successfully predicted the availability of Piper species in different parts of India as well as the hot spot of diversity and richness. It has also showed that environmental factors like temperature, rainfall, altitude have direct effect on the essential oil component of spices crops. Though the crop productivity is dependent on many other factors, but environmental suitability is one of the major factors to control the production of horticultural crops.
The institute also has Accreditation laboratory for certification of tissue cultured spices plants. Tissue culture plants of various spices are tested for virus infection and genetic fidelity under this facility.
IISR has set up a state-of-art data centre under the aegis of the ICAR Outreach Project on Phytophthora, Fusarium and Ralstonia in order to centralize its IT operations and equipment. A data centre is a dedicated space to house the most critical systems and is vital to the continuity of daily operations. The performance, operational integrity, security and reliability of the data centre are ensured with provisions for temperature and humidity controlled conditions, uninterrupted power supplies and back up, fire and water detection systems and security controls. Apart from the stand alone webserver, mailserver etc., a High Performance Computing (HPC) facility has also been set up exclusively for the analysis of next generation sequence (NGS) data. PhytoFuRa-HPC is a cluster of three nodes with GPU accelerators and high speed(InfiniBand) connections between nodes. Each node is with 8 processing cores, 48GB of RAM, and Intel Xeon processors. The processing speed of the HPC is 1.4 TF.
The Institute is having a well furnished conference hall (Silver jubilee Hall) situated in the centre of the institute with modern amenities. Facilities: 120 pax Fully Air Conditioned LCD projection system Slide Projection System Public Address System with UPS backup
