Located in The Government Dental College, Kozhikode is the second Dental College to be established in the state. It was started as a small department of Dentistry at Calicut Medical College in the year 1969. It was further expanded as a Dental wing with four specialties in 1974. In 1981 the Government decided to upgrade the wing to a full fledged Dental College. The B.D.S.Course was started with thirty students in the year 1982. Dr. B.R.R. Varma, Prof. of Periodontics, Dental College, and Trivandrum was appointed as the special Officer for this College. The College was shifted form Medical College building to the present six storied building in 1984., In 1986, the first B.D.S students graduated from this institution. Compulsory internship programme was initiated in 1986. Recognition of B.D.S Degree of University of Calicut was granted from September 1986 onwards. In 1996, the number of B.D.S seats was increased from thirty to forty. From 1988 the duration of the B.D.S course enhanced from four years to four and half years. In the year 1992, postgraduate course in the specialty of oral & maxillofacial surgery was started with an annual intake of two students. Postgraduate courses in the specialties of orthodontics & prosthodontics were started in 1994. In 1999, postgraduate courses were also started in oral pathology, conservative dentistry & periodontics. Sanction for starting postgraduate courses in the specialties of oral medicine & radiology and paedodontics has been granted by University of Calicut, government of Kerala and the DCI., In 1996 the dental college was given independent status with its on principal and complete office setup. Full administrative powers were delegated only in 2001., Government Dental College, Calicut is now celebrating its 25th years of excellence. Classes for basic medical subjects are being conducted in the respective departments of the medical college, Calicut. Eight Dental specialties are functioning in the Dental College, giving competent services to the public at large., From its inception as a small Department of Dentistry at the Calicut Medical College in 1969, the mission of the Govt. Dental College, Kozhikode has been to impart and improve the oral health care of the population. It later expanded as a Dental wing with four specialties in 1979 and was upgraded as a full fledged kozhikode GDC in 1981 with an intake of 30 students to the BDS course that started in 1982. Later this was enhanced to 40 students in 1996 and to 50 students in 2009. Our training programs are focused on the provision of quality educational experiences to train clinically competent dentists and develop advocates and dental leaders to address the oral health issues of the community. We achieve this through service, training, teaching and research., With the starting of postgraduate course first in the speciality of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1992, and various other specialties in the subsequent years, the college now has eight specialties offering MDS courses. Two students are admitted per year per specialty to the 3 year MDS course. Inspection for Increase in seat from 2 to 3 is already over for the dept of Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery & Conservative dentistry from May 2011.The general goals of the program are to provide the intellectual skills in applying the scientific method to solve problems in a rational and scientific manner. The student will use computer-aided bibliographic search strategies to identify pertinent literature and then locate information to assist in patient diagnosis and treatment. A second major goal is to provide training in various disciplines of dentistry in order to apply appropriate treatment strategies. Finally, the student will be assisted in defining an area of intellectual activity where new knowledge is needed. A research project will be devised and the student will carry through an area of original research in preparation of a dissertation., The college is the most modern and best equipped comparable to any of the sophisticated dental colleges of India. Hospital - clinic equipment is regularly updated ensuring that the students gain experience with the most modern facilities. It also ensures that patients get the best treatment options. Excellent library and computing facilities provide an additional learning resource. Our dental clinics and laboratories have the latest state-of-the-art equipment. To name a few, the newly installed fully equipped electric dental chairs and units, the Panoramic cephalogram unit and the digital IOPA units;RVG units, Ceramic Laboratories and casting units, the latest audiovisual aids including LCD / DLP projectors with PowerPoint projection, etc., To mark the excellence in its services the Govt. Dental College, Kozhikode celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2007.
