The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India has put forward a scheme wherein 20 new IIITs are proposed to be established in the country. A major objective in establishing IIITs is to set up an education model which can produce best-in-class human resources in IT and which can harness the multidimensional facets of IT in various domains. The IIIT is expected to contribute significantly to the global competitiveness through the key sectors of Indian economy and Industry, focusing on applied research and education in IT in selected domain areas.

Accordingly, setting up of an IIIT in Kottayam district under the 20-IIIT scheme of Government of India is sanctioned. The initial investment involved is 128 Crores, 64 Crores being a grant from the Central Government, 45 crores grant from Government of Kerala and 19 crores raised through private participation. In addition, the state will provide necessary land free of cost. The IIIT shall be located at Pala in Kottayam District. The land acquired is located at Vallichira village, Block No.20, Kottayam District.

Admisssion

The admission to IIIT is through Central Seat allocation Board (CSAB). The students are allotted admission by CSAB based on their JEE-Main ranks. The Indian Institute of Information Technology Kerala, Pala Kottayam is listed in the CSAB website under List of participating institutes in Other Central Government / State Government Funded Technical Institutes. Currently a B.Tech. course in Computer Science is offered.

Fee Structure

- The fees proposed for the BTECH program is INR 1.8 lakhs per year , but a concession of 50% shall be offered to the initial batches throughout their course. Effective payment would be INR 90000/-.

- The initial payment shall be Rs.45000/- (for semester 1) as tuition fees and Rs 36,000/- for the hostel expense, including rent, caution deposit, mess advance, laundry etc. (Mess bill per month will be around Rs. 3000/-).

Academic Structure

Currently a B.Tech. course in Computer Science is offered. The Classes for the first batch commenced in August 2015 in the temporary campus. Senior Faculty members (only those with PhD qualification from reputed institutes) from NIT- Calicut/RIT- Kottayam/Amal Jyothi Engineering College are conducting the classes (Retired/On Deputation/Adjunct). Presently the institution is managed by The Director, NIT Calicut as Mentor Director for administrative purposes.The Director of IIIT Hyderabad represents the Mentor Institution (IIIT, Hyderabad) for course and curriculum development. IIIT Kottayam has an innovative curriculum with a heavy focus on research.Most of the core courses are covered in first two years. The second half of the B.Tech. the program largely comprises of elective courses focusing on research.

The first year classes will be held at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering , Kottayam. Students shall join the IIIT Kottayam at the Amal Jyothi Campus The campus for IIIT Kottayam is coming up at Valavoor , Pala , Kottayam
