Located in Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit is named after the illustrious sage and philosopher Sree Sankaracharya, who was also and the exponent of Advaita. The University has its Head Quarters at Kalady, his birthplace, on the banks of the river Periyar in Kerala. Established under the Sanskrit University Act of 1994 of the Kerala Legislature, the University envisions imparting knowledge in various branches of Sanskrit as well as in Indology, Indian Culture, Indian Languages, Indian Philosophy, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages and Social Sciences. It also aims to promote the study and research of Sanskrit through unanimous promotion of other languages in India and abroad, that have copiously contributed to the study of Sanskrit. With 10 faculties abiding to 23 departments and 5 interdisciplinary research centres, the University now offers 8 U.G courses, 24 P.G courses along with their MPhil as well as PhD programmes accompanied by various diploma courses like Ayurveda Panchakarma & International Spa Therapy. The University celebrated its Silver Jubilee year in 2018 through a prolonged set of artistic and scholarly events throughout the year., Established under the Act S (1994) of the Kerala Legislature, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit was set in motion on 25th November 1993 right at the heart of Kalady, an emerging town in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. With a jurisdiction covering the entire state, the University extended its arms in a systematic process to eight Regional Centres at eight districts, which include the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram at the southern part to Payyannur at Kannur, the northern district of Kerala. Apart from the 2(F) and 12 (B) credits obtained from University Grants Commission (UGC), the University was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an ‘A’ grade on 24th September 2014, thus making it the first and foremost University in Kerala to secure this achievement. A University that initiated its operation with meagre number of staff and faculty members now accounts to 10 faculties, 23 departments and 5 interdisciplinary research centres benefiting more than 4,000 students under the service of 178 permanent teachers and 273 staff members..
