1976: Establishment of Tobacco Research Station (RTRS) to take up research on Flue cured Tobacco.
1982: Existing station elevated to the status of Regional Research Station with an objective of conducting research on rain fed cropping systems and farm implements under NARP.
1990: College of Agriculture established for Under Graduate courses in Agriculture, as a part of realization of Agricultural education.
2000: Starting of remandated KVK to boost extension activities in the zone.
2001: Starting of Areca Research Centre funded by Co-operative & Private sector.
2002: Starting of Master degree programme in line departments of Soil Science & Agril. Chemistry and Agril. Entomology.
2006: Starting of Organic Farming centre in Agriculture, Horticulture & Plantation crops.
2007: Starting of Diploma in Agriculture Extension Services for input dealers(DAESI) one year (two semester) for Agricultural input dealers.
Mandate
To impart basic knowledge and updated techniques of Agriculture and related sciences to the students.
Making them as competent agricultural scientist self-sustainable entrepreneurs in the related fields.
To provide knowledge on basic sciences and the related applied sciences, including the required practical knowledge.
To gain first hand knowledge about rural community, practical work experience and communication skills, one semester RWEP (Rural Work Experience Programme) in the villages has been made mandatory.
Location
The College and zonal Agricultural Research is located at Navile Farm , about 5 Km away from Shimoga town on Savalanga Road. It is an educational zone next to JNN College of Engineering and opposite to Bapuji Ayurvedic College. The campus comprises an area of about 78 hectares with partly irrigation facilities. The ZARS is the Head quarter for research activities carried out in its 5 Research Stations located at Bavikere, Honnaville, Shimoga, Gunjevu and Kathalagere of Southern Transitional Zone ( Zone-7) of Karnataka.
The College campus is located at an altitude of 650 M above MSL, latitutde of 14°0' N to 14°0' N and longitude of 75°40' to 75°42'East. The average rainfall is about 800 mm and the mean Max. & Min. Temperature are 35.80C in April and 14.8°C in January, respectively.
Travelling facilities : The Campus is connected by Road and Train from state capital Bangalore . The College of Agriculture is 5 Kms away from Railway Station / KSRTC/Private Bus Stand, Shimoga and Private City buses are plying from Main Bus Station to College campus.
