The Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts was established in 1982 at Mysore by the Government of Karnataka on the basis of the recommendations of the Dr. Roerich Committee, setup in 1976. In making their recommendations, the Dr. Roerich Committee was guided by the need for reorientation of Art Education in the state of Karnataka as to make it more responsive to the changing socio-economic environment of the post-independence era.
