    Sahyadri Institute of Health Sciences was founded in 2002 by Sri Manjunath Bhandary an Engineering graduate from the Kuvempu University, post graduate in political science from Mysore University. He is a well known philanthropist and social worker, an active politician. This college is a unit of Bhandary Foundation®. Touched by the gravity of HIV/AIDS menace, this college was founded as an instrument to be trained and to impart awareness specially to youngsters & thus to the society.

    The aim of nursing community world wide is for its professionals to ensure quality care for all. Nursing is the protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities. Nursing practice is observed in a wide range of settings. Nurses act as advicers and consultant to the health care and insurance industries. Nursing is the most diverse of all health care professions. Care and concern they exhibit for the patient is umparalleled and remarkable.

    SECTION - I

    Philosophy : Nursing faculty, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore presents the following statement of beliefs about Master of Science in Nursing (M.Sc Nursing) programme.

    The Master of Science in Nursing programme is offered by institutions of higher education and is built upon Bachelor's curriculum in Nursing, recognised by Indian Nursing Council. The programme prepares nurses for leadership position in nursing and health fields, who can function as specialist nurse practitioners, consultants, educationists, administrators and investigators in a wide variety of professional setting in meeting the national priorities and the changing needs of the society.

    The programme prepares nursing graduates who are professionally equipped, creative, self directed and socially motivated to effectively deal with day-to-day problems within the existing constraints and act as an agent of social change. Further the programme encourage accountability and commitment to life , long learning which fosters improvement of quality care.

    Objectives :

    Graduates of Master of Science in Nursing programme demonstrates,

    • Increased cognitive, affective and psychomotor competencies and the ability to utilse the potentialities for efficient nursing performance.
    • Expertise in the utilisation of concepts and theories for the assessment, planning and intervention in meeting the self-care needs of an individual for the attainment of his/her fullest potential in her/his field of speciality.
    • Ability to practice independently as a nurse specialist.
    • Ability to function effectiv ely as educators and administrators.
    • Ability to interpret health related research and develop initial competencies in conducting research.
    • Ability to plan and initate change in the health care system, in practice and in the delivery of health care.
    • Leadership qualities for the advancement of the practice of professional nursing.
    • Ability to establish collaborative relationship with members of other disciplines for maintaining and improving health care.
    • Interest in life long learning for personal and professional advancement.

    SECTION - II

    Eligibility:

    A candidate seeking admission shall have :

    • Passed B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) or Post Basic B.Sc. in Nursing degree or Post Certificate B.Sc. Nursing of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Karnataka (RGUHS) or any other university accepted as equivalent by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka.
    • Minimum of one years of experience after obtaining B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) in a hospital or in Nursing educational institution or in community health setting. For candidates with Post Basic B.Sc in Nursing degree no such experience is needed after graduation.
    • Registered to State Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife.
    Criteria for selections of candidates :

    The selection shall be based on merit judged on the basis of aggregate of marks obtained in the university examination from first year to final year B.Sc.(Basic) Nursing or Post Basic B.Sc. in Nursing and marks obtained in the selection test.

    Branches/Speciality :

    Candidates may choose any one of the branches of study at the time of admission:

    • Branch I - Medical Surgical Nursing
    • Branch II - Community Health Nursing
    • Branch III - Paediatric Nursing
    • Branch IV - obstetrics and gynaecology Nursing
    • Branch V - Psychiatric Nursing

    No change of branch of study shall be permitted afater a candidate joins the course.

    Duration :

    The Course of study shall be for two academic years.

    Course of study:

    In the M.Sc., I year, the following four subjects shall be common to all candidates irresperctive of the subject speciality chosen :

    • Advanced Concepts of Health & Nursing.
    • Biological and Psycho-social Foundations of Nursing.
    • Education and Nursing Education.
    • Bio-statistics, Research methodology and Nursing Research.

      These four subjects will be called as common subjects

    Nursing speciality - I : shall be the subject specialty chosen by the candidate from amongst the five brfanches mentioned above in Sl.number 3 ( Branches of Speciality) In the M.Sc., II year, the subject "Administration and Nursing Administration " shall be common to all candidatges irrespective of the subject specialty chosen.

    Nursing Specialty - II : shall be the branch of specialty chosen by the candidate.

    Attendance:

    • A candidate pursuing M.Sc. Nursing course shall study in the concerned department of the institution for the entire period as a full time student. No candidate isk permitted to work in any labortory/college/industry/pharmacy etc., while studying postgraduatge course. No candidate should join any other course of study or appear for any ohter examination conducted by this university or any other university in India or abroad during the period of registration.
    • Each year shall be taken as a unit for the purpose of calculating attendance.
    • Every student shallattend symposia, seminars, conferences, journal review meetings and lectures during each year as prescribed by the department/colege/university and not absent himself/herself without valid reasons.
    • Candidate who has put in a maximum of 80% of attendance in the theory and practical assighments separately, shall be permitted to appear for M.Sc Nursing examination, provided she/he has completed the course and has shown satisfactory progress mentioned in the logbook.
    • Any student who fails to complete the course in the manner stated above shall not be permitted to appear for the University examinations.
    • The Principal should notify in the college notice board attendance details at the end of each term without fail undr intimation to the university.
    • InternalL Assessment (IA) marks:

      There shall be continuous internal assessment. The marks for internal assessment setapart for theory and practical in each subjects in shown Table 3. These shall be a minimum of two tests and two assignments in each subject, the average of which shall form the marks for internal assessment. The principal should notify on the notice board the internal assessment marks of the students at the end of each term without fail under intimation to the university. The Prinicpals of the colleges shall send the internal assessment marks of the candidates both in theory and practicals to the university.

      A student must secure at least 50% of total marks fixed for I A in a particular subject in order to be eligible to appear in University Examination in that subject

      Certificate Course

      Diploma in General Nursing & Midwifery Programme - (GNM) Accreditation:

      Recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC) and approved by Karnataka Nursing Council (KNC) and Government of Karnataka.

      Subjects: Nursing Principles, Anatomy, Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Nutrition, Psychology, Medical and Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Maternity Nursing, Community Health & Midwifery.

      Examination: Students will appear for the theory and practical examination conducted by the Board at the end of each year. Selection examination is conducted two months before the common Board Examinations and those students who do not fare well in the internal examinations will not be permitted to take the Board Examination. The minimum marks required for passing any examination is 50 in each subject. No candidates are allowed to sit for the examination if his/her attendance is less than 75%. The percentage of class room and clinical attendance, general conduct of students and the performance in the clinical area are all taken into consideration.

      Eligibility: Educational Qualification should be PUC / 10+2 / Or any equivalent passed. Obtained at least 35% (Thirty-five percent) of the total marks in PUC / 10+2 / Or any equivalent. Age Between 17 to 35 years of age at the time of admission .

      Paper I Fundamentals of Nursing including First aid & Emergency Nursing.
      Paper II Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology
      Paper III Community, Health Nursing including Nutrition, Psychology, Sociology, Personal and Environment Hygiene, Health Education and Communication skills
      Practical I Fundamentals of Nursing.
      II YEAR
      Paper I Medical Surging Nursing - I (including Pharmacology)
      Paper II Medical Surging Nursing - I (including Nursing Specialties, Ophthalmology, ENT, Gynecological Nursing, Communicable Diseases, Orthopedic Nursing and Advanced Nursing Practices)
      Practical II Medical Surgical Nursing.
      Practical III Pediatric and Psychiatric Nursing.
      III YEAR
      Paper I Midwifery
      Paper II Community Health Nursing - II (including Professional adjustment & trends and Management and Supervision).
      Practical IV Midwifery / Psychiatric Nursing (alternate course for Male students).

      Eligibility :
      * Pass in the Pre-University Board of Education or its approved equivalent securing 45% marks in aggregate in the subject of Physics, Chemistry and Biology and English as one of the subjects of study (10+2).
      * A candidate in the age group of 17 years is eligible to apply for admission.
      * Applicants should be medically fit.
      * Admissions are available for female & male candidates.
      * Application Procedure: Those seeking admission to the course must apply on the prescribed form and submit it with the requisite documents together with a registration fee of Rs.500/- by bank draft drawn in favor of " Sahyadri College of Nursing " payable at Mangalore.
