VKIT was established in the year 1997 by Janatha Education Society(JES) in its Silver Jubilee year, VKIT affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, approved by AICTE New Delhi and recognized by Government of Karnataka.

The students of VKIT are colloquially referred to as VKITians. VKIT has carved a niche for itself for its best technical education provided in the state.
