In the initial stages of pharmacy education in the country, the pharmacists qualified from other states were appointed into the government services of the state. The first generation pharmacists of state felt the need of pharmacy education in this region of the country and started Government of college of pharmacy (GCP), at Bangalore under the Drugs control department in the year 1964. Government of college of pharmacy was offering only D. Pharm. and B. Pharm courses. Later on M.Pharm. course was introduced. Now the institution is offering D.Pharm. (60 seat intake), B.Pharm (50 seat intake) and PG courses in four specializations namely M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutics with 08 seats intake), M. Pharm (pharmacognosy with 08 seats intake), M. Pharm (pharmacology with 08 seats intake) and M.Pharm (pharmachemistry with 08 seats intake). This has helped the socioeconomically backward and meritorious students of Karnataka. How ever, the growth of Pharma sector and the population enhanced the opportunities and demand for trained pharmacists. As a result several private pharmacy institutions were begun in the state. In spite of spurt of private institutions, GCP is catering the needs of meritorious and economically backward students, as the cost in private institutions are very high. The college grew phenomenally under the stewardship of stalwarts in the field as its principals. The institution being the first pharmacy college of the state has been considered as the pioneer institution in the country. The alumni of this institution scattered to the nook and corner of the world and serving the profession in various capacities and bringing laurels not only to them and but also for the institution., The states of art infrastructural facilities are the highlights of the institution. The students and teachers are provided with well equipped laboratories, voluminous library, Wi Fi internet facilities for the up gradation and undertaking challenging research activities. The institution adapted to the changing needs of the profession and upgraded its teaching and research activities so as to suit to the present day Pharma sector. It is very proud to proclaim the 8 out of first 10 ranks in the PGCET exams conducted in 2011 are bagged by the students of the institution. This speaks about the quality of students and faculty in the institution. Even research activities are progressing in accelerated pace as indicated by the number of research publications in a year (about 30 papers in various national and international journals).
