CMPDI (Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited), an ISO-9001 company, holds the pre-eminent position as the India's largest consultancy organisation and the market leader in an expanding earth resource sector. A key factor in this success has been the offering of full-range of services in the sphere of resource exploration & development, coal preparation, utilisation and management, coal/material handling arrangement, as well as engineering and environmental management.

CMPDI was established in the year 1975 as a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (a Government of India Enterprise) for rendering total consultancy services (i.e. from concept to commissioning) to Coal India Limited and it's seven subsidiaries which contribute about 90% of the total coal production of the country.

Over the years, the initial experiences have effectively been extended to provide wide range of services right from coal exploration to its commercial application to different industrial sectors. Currently CMPDI, besides Coal India Limited and it's seven subsidiaries, extends consultancy services to host of clients in India and abroad. The clients include Government and Private Entrepreneurs, United Nations Agencies, International Financial Institutions, etc. Total focus on quality of services led to CMPDI being accredited ISO-9001 Certificate by Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI).

CMPDI operates through its headquarters at Ranchi and seven regional institutes located at Asansole, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Nagpur, Bilaspur, Singrauli and Bhubaneswar, which are geographically spread in six states of the country.

CMPDI has comprehensive experience in dealing with mining projects having geo-structural complexities. CMPDI has planned about 700 projects for an additional capacity generation of over 500 million tonnes of coal per annum. It has developed expertise in the reconstruction of mines, conversion of underground mines into open cast, mining in rugged terrain etc.
