    NACEN is India's apex organization for imparting training to the officers of Customs , Excise and Narcotics wing of the Revenue Department under the Ministry of Finance. It is located in the Industrial town of Faridabad, 25 Kms from the National capital - New Delhi. The NACEN represents an interesting confluence of academic rigour and intellectual freedom. Apart from Training of the Probationers , the Academy also conducts refresher courses for senior officers of the Revenue department as well as the officers from Asian and African countries.

    NACEN also has support centres in the form of four regional Training Institutes at Mumbai Chennai , Calcutta and Delhi where training is imparted to field officers in the Group 'B' and'C' cadres. In addition , Staff college Chennai takes care of the Customs training of the direct recruits probationers of the IC&CES.

    NACEN conducts various courses including Induction courses , refresher courses and specialized courses at its Headquarters at Faridabad and Regional Training Centres at Delhi , Mumbai , Chennai and Calcutta . A training calendar highlighting the training schedule for the year is prepared well in advance keeping in view the specific needs of the Department.

    Training of Group 'A' Probationers

    After undergoing the Foundation course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration - Mussorie , the direct recruits Group 'A' Probationers of the Indian Customs and Central Excise service report at NACEN for their professional / Induction training . The professional training of the probationers consists of Institutional-cum-observational training in laws and procedures relating to Customs , Central Excise , Narcotics and other allied laws. Further there are visits to excisable units , attachment with the field formations and specialized training in subjects like Cost Accounting , Financial Management , Parliamentary procedures & practice , arms handling & techniques of self-defence like unarmed combat (UAC) , motor driving , swimming , computers , etc.

    Training in Central Excise and allied matters is mainly imparted at NACEN - Faridabad while for Customs and allied laws the training is at NACEN's staff college in Chennai. The direct recruits probationers are also sent for attachment to wildlife Institute , Indian Navy , Coast Guard , BSF Academy , etc. for improving their skills in various areas.

    The focus of the Academy and its regional training centres is to adapt training programs which cater to the business activities and needs of the department . The priority is to facilitate development of professionalism and responsibility among officers so as to enhance their service delivery standards The objective of the training program is to infuse officers with a positive attitude and to bring about greater efficiency and effectiveness in their constantly evolving work environment.

    Keeping in view the rapid changes in the global economy and international trade , and new concepts like E-Commerce , EDI , Internet etc. , NACEN has introduced courses in areas relating to Commercial frauds & Money laundering , Service Tax , TRIPS & TRIMS , Computer as a management tool , MDP , Gender Sensitization , Management courses for senior officers of the rank of Commissioners and Chief Commissioners.

    A new focus area is the concept of conducting Workshops where current issues and problems relating to classification & valuation cases in Central excise & customs , Citizen's Charter , WTO and other related issues are discussed . NACEN also develops customized courses catering to the needs of other enforcement agencies like Police , CBI , BSF , etc.

    To support its training mission, the NACEN has a wide range of facilities which include spacious and well equipped lecture rooms, conference halls, library, mess ,hostel, sports complex, post office, EPABX, computer lab and lately, the LAN and the Internet.


    The primary focus of the facilities at the Academy is on teaching. There are a number of well equipped air-conditioned lecture rooms and seminar/conference halls , SVGA projectors to handle computer screens and VCR output , Slide and overhead projectors . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------


    All the computer systems are connected to the Internet through the Academy's LAN. The Academy has recently set up a LAN (Local Area Network) . There is a PC in rooms of all the faculty members . The Academy is linked internally through e-mail; to the world through Internet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------


    This library has a huge collection of books from every field . Periodicals, popular magazines and newspapers are on regular subscription. Reference catalogues are maintained in this library. The timings of the library are: Working Days-- 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs ( Monday to Friday) Reference material can be photocopied in the library. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------


    At the heart of the community life of the Academy is the Officers Mess . Officers' Mess is the centre of community life at the Academy. The Mess Committee routinely organizes formal and informal get-togethers. The Celebration of different festivals and zonal days when an atmosphere of regional cultures is created, are among the more important functions organized. Officers mess is managed by the Mess Committee of the Probationers and assisted by full time Mess Officer, Accountant and staff of about 10. The Mess Committee organizes formal and informal evenings along with one of the Clubs or Societies. The Mess officers for the 52nd batch are : Rajendra kumar Gupta ( PMC) Giridhar.G.Pai ( Secretary) Rahul Nangre ( Treasurer) There is also a cable TV and various indoor games in the Mess Lounge.



    There are a number of residential units and blocks for the Officer Trainees, Faculty and staff. The Guest houses in Mandakini and Alaknanda houses those visiting the Academy. The hostel rooms are fully furnished. Each room has an electric heater and coolers. Bathrooms are equipped with geysers . Room bearers are attached to Bhagirathi hostel which lodges the IRS Probationers. There is a lounge in all the hostels , with a cable TV. Alaknanda hostel has been just equipped with a Home theatre system.



    ENT and eye specialists, orthopaedists, cardiologists, dentists and General Physicians on contract visit the Academy . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------


    The Academy has a very well equipped sports complex having facilities for almost all games and sports. There is a tennis courts, badminton court, a basketball court and a volleyball court . The Academy also has good facilities for indoor games like table tennis and billiards. There is a gymnasium with gym machines, weights and various other equipment for physical fitness. The latest addition to the sports infrastructure was a swimming pool which was inaugurated in March 2000.



    The Academy has a large number of clubs and societies which organise various activities ranging from treks to cultural evenings to discussions. Participants of a course elect representatives from among themselves, to manage these organizations during their stay at the Academy. Computer Society keeps officer trainees abreast with the latest advances in Computers. It organizes various activities like quizzes, debates, demonstration of the latest in computer technology and special sessions on computers.

    Cultural Society brings out musical and acting talent among officer trainees. It organizes cultural evenings, singing and drama competitions, classes in singing, dance and acting, zonal day functions with themes drawn from India's 5,000 year old multi-ethnic cultural heritage.     Sports Society provides facilities for both outdoor and indoor games. The outdoor facilities include Lawn Tennis, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Cricket . The indoor games include Billiards, Carrom, Chess, Table Tennis, and Badminton. It also organizes in-house competitions and matches with other institutions and Commissionerates.

    Gardening Society maintains the greenery and the colourful ambience throughout the campus. Activities like planting of saplings , cleanliness drive , watering of plants , etc. are all taken up by the society on regular intervals.
