As a part of its continuing efforts to open up to artists from across the globe, Darpana has just become a partner with UNESCO in the UNESCO Ashberg Bursaries. These bursaries allow one selected artist to come and work at the partner institution for a period of three months. Darpana had invited applications from performance artists interested in multidisciplinary work. Over 60 applications were recived from countries as far apart as Cuba, Peru, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Russia, Colombia and Tanzania. A shortlist was prepared by Darpana and the final selection was done by a UNESCO jury in July.Roazario Jaramillo from Columbia, a theatre and voice artist, was selected as the first scholor and is currently working at the Academy.
Established by Mrinalini Sarabhai and Vikram Sarabhai in 1949, the Darpana Academy for Performing Arts has been directed by their daughter Mallika Sarabhai for the last three decades.
The Academy's vision is a contemporary symbiosis affirming the role of creativity in culture, researching into our origins and reaching out to the unsaid or unthought of, with a language that is universal. Darpana today is a centre for artists committed to excellence, innovation and the excitement of using the arts for change. Its departments range from performance and teaching of the arts, to the use of performance and arts as development communication, through face-to-face impact and software production. Darpana's audiences range from arts-lovers to people in positions of power, the less privileged across the world, children, women, tribal populations and more. With over 25,000 graduates, nearly 11000 performances, audiences in 90 countries, a vibrant arts environment, managed by a strong staff, Darpana is known around the world as an institution of innovation in performance and the arts. Darpana is a meeting point of performing artists and intellectuals. The Drama Section, under acting duo Kailash Pandya and Damini Mehta, is responsible for more than 100 productions of a wide variety. Darpana attracted young writers and staged their first scripts, making them an integral part of production efforts. Some of the names can be mentioned as Madhu Rye, Labhshankar Thaker, Shrikant Shah, Subhash Shah, Chinu Modi, and Hasmukh Baradi. It also conducted theatre-training courses for over two decades. Its research wing, Janvak, published monographs like Goverdhan Panchal's on Bhavai. Darpana has also built an experimental thrust auditorium, Natrani, reminiscent of Greek amphitheatres, on the banks of the river Sabarmati.
