Institute of Maritime Studies IMS, Vasco da Gama was established in the year 1997,
The Institute of Marine Engineers (India) formed a " Technical Cell " to explore the possibility of starting some more Pre-sea training courses in Marine Engineering as per STCW 95 Convention. It start form 1997, on a request from the D.G. shipping.The technical cell sought information from various Shipyards and Ship repairing industries, and found that none of the workshops had all the facilities under one roof. Also their managements could not immediately invest in creation of additional facilities.
The following courses are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai, under Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Govt. of India. The courses conforms to the International Convention on STANDARDS OF TRAINING, CERTIFICATION AND WATCHKEEPING (STCW), 1995 and Merchant Shipping (STCW) Rules, 1998.
One year Pre-sea Training Course in Marine Engineering for Graduate in Mechanical Engineering / Naval Architecture, is approved by Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai, vide their Approval No. ENG/EXAM/17(32)/97 dated 11/06/1997 & Approval No. TR/A/45/2007, dated 29/11/2007.
Two year Pre-sea Training Course in Marine Engineering for Diploma holders in Mechanical / Electrical / Shipbuilding / Marine Engineering, is approved by Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai, vide their Approval No. 3 - TR (20)/97 dated 24th April, 2000. Engine Room Simulator Course at Operational Level

The syllabus for the course is based on requirements of the convention of International Maritime Organization ( IMO) on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping ( STCW), 1995 and Merchant Shipping (STCW) Rules, 1998.
Career Prospects:
Successful students will have to pass M.EO. Class IV Part A Examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Dept. Govt. of India and after passing the same will be eligible for appointment as Junior Engineers on board merchant ships. Candidate will rise to the position of the Chief Engineer within 5 to 6 years on passing further examinations.

Career Prospects
Successful students will be eligible for exemption from Part A of M.EO. Class IV Certificate of Competency Examination and after obtaining the same will be eligible for appointment as Junior Engineers on board merchant ships. Candidate will rise to the position of the Chief Engineer within 7 to 8 years on passing required examinations. All candidates are selected by various Shipping Companies at the time of admission.Shipping companies participate in the Interviews for admission, and select their candidates for placement at admission stage itself.
