It was built by the Portuguese in 1842 as the Escola Medico-Cirurgica de Goa. Originally located in Panjim, the college was moved to Bambolim. Goa Medical College (GMC) and Goa Dental College are located opposite each other on either side of the road connecting Panjim and Cortalim

Goa Medical College is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia and we have recently increased our intake in the undergraduate and postgraduate seats at the institute. Goa Medical College and Hospital is a Government tertiary care hospital. It is our constant endeavor to provide quality services to all those who visit the hospital. The services provided at the Goa Medical College are described in the citizen's charter for GMC and are also available on the website www.gmc.gov.in GMC is also a teaching hospital. The college is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and also provides training to students pursuing their education in the field of dentistry, nursing and other affiliated fields.

The vision of this institute is to impart quality medical services to the all sections of the society and further improve the health scenario of the State.
