The journey of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), popularly known as Pusa Institute, began in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar) with the generous grant of 30,000 pounds from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. The institute was then known as Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) which functioned with five departments, namely Agriculture, Cattle Breeding, Chemistry, Economic Botany and Mycology. Bacteriology unit was added in 1907.
Studies on integrated nutrients, water and weed management in cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and spices based cropping system; investigations on bio-mass production, use of bio-fertilizers and agro-energetics with emphasis on recycling of crop plants, shrubs, tree residues and effective utilization of agricultural wastes; studies on integrated approach for efficient utilization of rainwater and nutrients, and contingent crop planning for rainfed areas. School of Natural Resource Manage...
To identify new pests and diseases, their spread and priority research target pests as well as prediction of pest incidence; biochemical and molecular basis of host parahost pathogen interaction with reference to mechanism of resistance and virulence of pests, cloning of useful genes and genetic engineering for pest and disease resistance in crop plants; biochemical and molecular characterization of pests, pathogen strains/ races/bio-types for rapid and authentic identification; develop bio-c...
The increasing importance of Horticultural crops in growth, nutritional & livelihood security and vibrancy of Indian agriculture has attained focus in recent times.
These varieties have been tested at different locations in the areas of their adaptation and the average and potential yields are given on the basis of the trials conducted in the areas of their adaptation under the favorable conditions with full package of improved technology. Hence, the projected yields can be achieved only under optimum cultivation practices like proper time of sowing, irrigation at critical stages, fertilizer application, inter culture operations, plant protection measure...
Molecular basis of male sterility and fertility restoration; genetic engineering for enhanced nutritional quality in crops, delayed fruit ripening; genetic transformation: Development or regeneration in recalcitrant crop plants; rice genome sequencing; regulatory mechanism of photosynthetic efficiency; regulation of photosynthetic efficiency and assimilate partitioning under changed climatic condition in Brassica, rice and sorghum; genetic enhancement of efficient utilization of nutrients; re...
A small Statistical section established in 1930 under the, then, Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, to assist the State Departments of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in planning their experiments, analysis of experimental data, interpretation of results and rendering advice on the formulation of the technical programmes as also examining the progress reports of the schemes funded by the Council.
