The University was renamed as Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University on November 7th 1996 in honour and memory of an outstanding Parliamentarian Acharya N.G. Ranga, who rendered remarkable selfless service for the cause of farmers and is regarded as an outstanding educationist, kisan leader and freedom fighter. The importance of the application of Science and Technology for Agricultural development was realized as early as in the beginning of century.

Agricultural College, Bapatla was started on 11th July 1945 by the erstwhile Government of composite Madras State on the recommendations of the Post War Reconstruction Committee. It is the oldest among 12 Agricultural Colleges in Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU). It was started with the aim of imparting Agricultural education for under graduate students and to turn out the Agricultural Graduates to man various post war reconstruction schemes.

A small Statistical section established in 1930 under the, then, Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, to assist the State Departments of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in planning their experiments, analysis of experimental data, interpretation of results and rendering advice on the formulation of the technical programmes as also examining the progress reports of the schemes funded by the Council.
