Dr. Zakir Husain Institute, Patna has been established in the year 1979 with the help of prominent academicians, social workers, philosophers, planners and administrators, management thinkers, educationists as an autonomous, non-profit making , institute for training, research and studies in the areas of education (formal and non-formal), management, computer science, mass communication and rural development.

Established on 21st January, 1942, HD Jain College, Ara was the first institution of higher learning ever set up in the economically and academically backward region of Shahabad in fact, the first college between Patna and Varansi. It owes its foundation to the Late Babu Har Prasad Das Jain, a rich landlord and philanthropist of the town. He himself had little formal education but was a great lover of learning and firmly believed that progress and learning walked arm in arm.

With this mission in mind, Pram Pujya Sri GADADHARACHARYA alias MACHA BABA conceived the idea to start a college to impart education to the children of the poor people of this rural area.
