Born on 26 January, 1907, Satyawati Vidyalankar was not merely a freedom fighter, but also a harbinger of new kinds of politics in her times. In a span of 38 years, (1907-45), she rose to prominence in India’s freedom struggle. She was christened as Toofani Behn by Mahatma Gandhi because of her ability for instant mobilization for a cause. For her, the workers were as critical to the nationalist campaign as the middle class, the mainstay in the then battle for freedom.
