St. Joseph’s College for Women was established in 1954 by the Canossian Daughters of Charity, an international congregation of missionary sisters. It is situated in the heartland of the Alleppey town, which is historically renowned in the world mercantile map for its coir and spices trade and now acclaimed as a major international tourist destination, as the land of boat races, backwaters, canals, and lagoons.

Women’s College, Jharsuguda, the premier institute of Higher Education for women in the district, came into existence on 5th August,1982 thanks to the noble endeavour of the esteemed members of the Jharsuguda Educational Welfare Trust. The history of Jamia Hamdard begins with the establishment of a small Unani clinic in the year 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, one of the well-known practitioners of Unani System of Medicine of his time. Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed had a vision of making the practice of Unani Medicine into a scientific discipline so that Unani medicines could be dispensed in a more efficacious manner to patients. He gave the name “Hamdard” to his venture which means “sympathy for all and sharing of pain”.

On 29th June, 1944, Baring Union Christian College came into existence when the District and sessions Judges of Gurdaspur, Mr. S.Burke, ICS, cut the ribbon at the Anarkali and the first boys and girls enrolled in the college filled the main building, which once had housed exclusively the sons of the upper class Christian families of the Punjab. There were at the time of its inception in 1944 about 75 students predominantly from Hindu, Muslim and Sikh background.
