Established in 1944 as Sambalpur College, the name of the institution was changed to Gangadhar Meher College in 1949 after the name of the illustrious Oriya poet. It is situated in a tribal dominated part of Orissa and strives hard for excellence in its way to fulfill its goal and mission since then. Basically, it aims at educating weaker sections, which constitute half of the population of Western part of Orissa.

Govt.Degree College, Samba affiliated to University of Jammu was established in the year 2005, by the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir.In the beginning only the subject in Arts stream were offered. It was in 2010 that in respond to students demand,Science and Commerce stream were also started in addition to Arts stream. At present there are 19 subjects taught in college. There are 37 permanent faculty members and 15 academic arrangement teachers in the college.

kuchinda college, established in the year 1964 is nestled in a picturesque setting at the head-quarters of kuchinda sub-division in the district of sambalpur.

Bhima Bhoi College, Rairakhol, Sambalpur, Orissa was established in the year 1970 and got recognition from the UGC under 2f on 30-6-1992. Presently it is affiliated with Sambalpur University. The campus is located in a rural area, now under Notified Area Council, inhabited predominantly by the tribal people. It is spread over an area of 20 acres.

The College situated on the left Bank of river Mahanadi. Dhama, about 25 kms. South of Sambalpur town, is a historical village of learning, culture, trade and commerce. To fulfill the long cherished aspiration of the people of 10 nos. of Gram-Panchayat of Maneswar block, a Degree College, named after the presiding deity of the locality Jhadeswari Devi, was established in the year 1998.

People of Samba and the surrounding areas had been demanding for opening of a college at Samba right from 1952. In 1983 Wazir Commission recommended a separate District “BAHU” comprising of Tehsil Samba and areas from west bank of river Tawi. But the recommendations were not implemented and the demand of people of Samba remained hanging in balance.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose College, formerly known as Trust Fund College, Sambalpur was established in 1972-73. It is affiliated to the Sambalpur University and has receive Government concurrence since 1972-73 till 31.05.1975. The college used to receive grant in aid from the government from 01.06.1975 it came under direct payment scheme. At present there is teaching facility up to degree stage in Arts and Commerce courses only.

Saraswat Degree Mahavidyalaya, a co-educational institution came into existence in the year 1996 with the sustained efforts and active involvement of local people. It is situated at Godbhaga under Kalamati Panchayat, Dhankauda Block, District-Sambalpur.

Government Women's College, Sambalpur is a Government Educational Institution imparting. Women Higher Education in graduation and Post-Graduation level. This Institution was established on 17 July,1959 in the District of Sambalpur. It extends teaching facilities in Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Commerce and the latest fields like information technology etc.

Established in the year 1983 as an infant institution by the local well-wishers to cater to the needs of higher education, Bamra Trust Fund College, Bamra has passed through a long period of success in the midst of struggle to grow up into an adolescent institution at present.
