National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa, INDIA (NIT) formerly known as the Regional Engineering College (REC), is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India. NIT is a joint undertaking of the government of India and the government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision of the then Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister Of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.

The institution, City Institute of technical Education came into existence during the session 2009-2010 under the auspices of the Vivekananda Educational & Welfare Trust, Jamunanagar, N.H-23, Kuarmunda. The idea behind setting up a technical school was based on the conviction that in this remote rural pocket of the state, no other technical institute existed to cater to the needs of young men and women having an eye for pursuing a professional diploma course.

Dr. Ajudhia Nath Khosla, former Governor of Odisha was a doyen of the DAV movement in Odisha. His wife Smt. Sushilavati Khosla, donated a sum of rupees one lakh from her savings to the D. A. V. Trust, in whose collaboration the D. A. V. trust started the "S.K.D.A.V. The Regional Engineering College, Rourkela (RECR) is located in the industrial city of Rourkela, in the state of Orissa (India). The city of Rourkela came into prominence in the year 1954-55, with the decision of Govt. of India to set up the first public sector steel plant in this locality with the collaboration of West Germany. At present the city is a large metropolis with a population of around 4 lacs.
