The College established in 1965 with about 250 students and four departments has transformed into one of the largest Colleges of the University of Mumbai with enrollment of more than 11000 students, six faculties, 22 Undergraduate Departments, 8 Postgraduate Departments, 7 Research Centers, 7 Professional Courses, 7 Dual Degree Courses and 3 Prestigious UGC sponsored community outreach centers.
G. N. Khalsa was the brainchild of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who wanted to set-up a centre or an institute in Bombay for higher education. In 1935 he put forth this proposal of establishing an educational institution for higher education in Bombay to the Sikh religious leaders at Amritsar.
Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), started the Mithibai College of Arts & Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan Institute of Science in 1961 as a part of its own Silver Jubilee Celebration. Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce and Economics was an addition in the year 1980. A complex was thereby formed that embraced the three main streams of education – Arts, Science and Commerce.
