NIT Manipur started its first session on 2nd August 2010 with only three branches of Engineering namely - Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering at Government Polytechnic, Takyelpat Campus. It is presently functioning in its Permanent Campus at Langol, Imphal, with two more Engineering Branches namely - Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. The institute has acquired 341.5 acres of land in lush green areas of Langol, Imphal.

Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology CIPET was established in 1968 by Government of India with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme UNDP at Chennai. The main objective of setting up of this specialized institute was to develop manpower in different disciplines of Plastics Engineering & Technology as no similar institute was in existence in the country. International Labour Organization ILO served as the executing agency.

This institute was established in the year 1956 by the Adimjati Shiksha Ashram to provide technical education to the students of the North-Eastern States. The Government of Manipur took over the institute in 1972 from the said Ashram and renamed it as the Government Polytechnic, Imphal. Since its inception, the institute has been running Three years Diploma courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to train the youths of Eastern region.
