आजाद भारत में उत्तर प्रदेश का पहला विश्‍वविद्यालय महायोगी गुरूश्री गोरखनाथ की तपस्थली गोरखपुर में स्थापित हुआ। यह सुज्ञात तथ्य है कि महायोगी गोरखनाथ के नाम पर ही इस नगर का नाम गोरखपुर पड़ा। गोरखपुर विश्‍वविद्यालय गोरखपुर नाम से विश्‍वविद्यालय की स्थापना हुयी। आज यह विश्‍वविद्यालय प्रसिद्ध राजनीतिक चिंतक, एकात्म मानववाद के प्रणेता पं0 दीनदयाल उपाध्याय जी के नाम पर दीनदयाल उपाध्याय गोरखपुर विश्‍वविद्यालय के नाम से प्रतिष्ठित है।

The foundation stone of B.R.D. Medical College, Gorakhpur was laid on 8th November, 1969 by late Shri C.B. Gupta, the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. The institution was named after “Baba Raghav Das”, a devoted freedom fighter and Sarvodaya leader of this area. The appearance of a medical college in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, so called ‘Purvanchal’, improved the availability of tertiary health care in this relatively backward area.

Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology, Gorakhpur has been established in year 2013 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in the form of a non-affiliating, teaching and research University after reconstituting the Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College, Gorakhpur which was established in 1962.
