Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Guwahati campus was founded on 7 September 2006 as the first non-governmental engineering institute in Assam under the patronage of the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society. Ever since its inception, the institute’s aim has been to establish a morally sound educational system, which not only produces competent professionals but also excellent human beings contributing towards the welfare of the Society.

Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon of the East India Company, was the pioneer to start Health Education and health care in Assam. He established a medical school known as 'Berry White Medical School' at Dibrugarh, Assam in 1898-99. In course of time this medical school was upgraded and on 3rd Nov., 1947 the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established and it stands as the first medical college in Assam.

Guwahati Medical College and Hospital was established in 1960 along with Silchar Medical College as a twin college. The college was initially started in an empty Ayurvedic College with 60 students. Assam Engineering College (AEC), the first engineering college in the north-eastern India and a premier technical institute of the entire country, was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in year of 1955. It is the premier technical institute of North East India and is located in the Jalukbari area of Guwahati city. AEC has been the hub of many academic and supplementary activities in Assam for almost six decades.

Pragjyotish College college was established on 1st of September 1954. Eminent scholar and litterateur Pandit Tirthanath Sarma was its founder principal. From its modest inception as an Arts college, Pragjyotish College has now developed into its present stature of a famous full-fledged Degree College, imparting higher education in Arts, Science and Commerce streams. The college also has two post-graduate departments, viz. Assamese and Tourism Management.
