Government First Grade College, Yellapur came into existence in 1985 with 02 UG programmes i.e., Arts and Commerce. It is managed by the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Karnataka. The college made a humble beginning with an enrollment of just 70 students. Now it is proud to state that, our Institution has become one of the premier colleges for Commerce and Arts. The J.S.S.Banashankari Arts, Commerce and Shantikumar Gubbi Science College, was originally started in 1944 by the Karnataka education Board with a mere strength of forty students. It was taken over by the Late Shri R.S.Hukkerikar the veteran freedom fighter, constructive worker and educationist in 1952. The college was originally started as an intermediate college but Science wing was added in the year 1949.

Govt First Grade College Bankapur is an affiliated institution of Karnataka University. The University prescribes the syllabi, academic calendar, examination and evaluation. The faculty members of the college have the privilege of being the members of Board of Studies and the Board of Examination and thereby contribute to the syllabi and evaluation. Hence the responsibility of designing the curriculum does not solely rest with teachers.
