The Department of Marine Science at the University of Calcutta is inviting applications for admission to the PhD program in Marine Science for the academic year 2024-25. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply in the prescribed format along with the required documents.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have already obtained a Master’s Degree in Marine Science or are awaiting their final results, as well as those who have completed their respective postgraduate degrees in relevant science and technology disciplines from any UGC recognized University/Institute, as per UGC guidelines, are eligible to apply.

In cases where a candidate wishes to apply for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Marine Science with a preceding qualifying degree for a subject in which there is no University Post-Graduate Department, they must seek an endorsement from the Ph.D. Research Advisory Committee of the Department of Marine Science. This endorsement should be submitted along with their application for admission to the Ph.D. programme. Candidates who have already passed NET/SET/GATE/DST-INSPIRE or equivalent examinations are exempted from the written Admission Test. However, they must appear in and qualify the interview.


Reservation policy in admission will be followed as per the West Bengal State Higher Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) rules, 2013.

Application Procedure

Interested candidates are requested to submit the filled application form (attached below) along with the following self-attested testimonials to the office of the Department of Marine Science, C.U., situated on the 7th Floor, Ballygunge Science College campus, 35, B.C. Road, Kolkata-700019. Submissions should be made on all University working days between 12 noon to 3 pm, and the deadline for submission is February 12th, 2024.

  1. Recent passport-size color photograph of the candidate.
  2. Final Mark sheet of the postgraduate degree.
  3. Rank Card/Certificate, etc., of NET/SET/GATE, etc.
  4. Caste Certificate, if applicable (SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B, etc.).
  5. SBI Collect Transaction document.

Payment of Fees

  • The prescribed application fee of Rs. 100/- is to be deposited online through SBI Collect
  • For making the payment go to the site specified above, then choose State-(West Bengal), Type- (Educational Institution), then select Calcutta University and proceed to Category-(Payment of Misc. Fees), choose Application for Admission to PhD and proceed to the next step.

Entrance Examination

Structure of the Entrance Examination and Subsequent Process:

An Admission Test, worth 50 marks, will be conducted based on the M.Sc. Syllabus of Marine Science at Calcutta University. The qualifying marks for the interview will be set at 50% of the total marks of the admission test.

The written test of the RET (Research Eligibility Test) will consist of two parts:

  • Group-A (10 marks): One broad answer-type question (to be answered in approximately 250 words).
  • Group-B (40 marks): Twenty short answer-type questions (each question carrying 2 marks). All candidates appearing for the RET written part must respond to all questions. The questions aim to assess the candidates’ understanding in various branches of Marine Science.

The qualifying marks for the Written Test will be set at 50%.

Candidates who pass the written examination will proceed to the interview stage, where they will compete with other eligible candidates who have already cleared NET/SET/GATE/M.Tech.
