University of Calcutta PhD in Horticulture Admission

The Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agricultural Science, Calcutta University, is inviting applications for admission to the PhD (Ag.) Degree in Horticulture program for the academic year 2024-25. Candidates who are interested in pursuing research work leading to the PhD (Ag.) degree in Horticulture at the University of Calcutta are encouraged to apply in the prescribed format along with the necessary documents.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates holding a Master of Science (Ag) degree in Horticulture or Allied Biological Sciences (without NET/SET/SLET/GATE) with a minimum of 50% marks from any UGC recognized University are eligible to participate in the written part of the Examination. Selection will be based on both the Entrance Test and Interview.

Eligible candidates will be required to take a written examination (comprising Multiple Choice Questions and Short answer type questions) lasting for 1 hour. The examination will be conducted at the Department of Horticulture, and further details are provided below. Successful candidates (achieving a benchmark of 50% of the total marks in the written examination) will be invited for an interview.

Application Process:

All candidates are requested to download the Application Form from the University website www.caluniv.ac.in. After filling out the Application Form, candidates must submit it along with the following documents: One passport-size photograph, Self-attested copies of relevant mark sheets, Proof of age, and Certificate supporting reserve category. Additionally, candidates must provide the receipt of deposition of the Application Fee of ₹100/- (One hundred only), which can be paid through a challan obtainable at the College Street cash counter of the University of Calcutta or through State Bank Collect online.

Selection Procedure:

For the final selection of candidates, 70% weightage will be given to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/viva-voce, as per Clause 5.4.2 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Awards of M.Phil/Ph.D Degree) Regulation 2016.

The allocation of a supervisor will be based on the performance in the interview conducted at the Department of Horticulture. Candidates who have already passed UGC-CSIR-ICAR NET/SET/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship or equivalent examinations are exempted from the written test and can directly apply for the interview. For them, 100% weightage will be given for the interview only.

All candidates called for an interview must submit a statement of purpose or research brief and appear for the interview on the specified date.
