Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates applying for the PhD program must have obtained a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade under a grading system) in their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from recognized universities or institutions. However, for candidates belonging to SC/ST/CAT 1 categories, the minimum aggregate requirement is 50%.

Application Process

The online application, along with the prescribed fee and required documents, must be submitted by March 24, 2024. Detailed instructions can be found at www.tumkuruniversity.ac.in. Candidates are also required to submit a hard copy of the application, along with necessary enclosures, to the Chairman/Coordinator of the respective departments by March 30, 2024.

The application fee is Rs. 1650/- for General and OBC candidates, and Rs. 825/- for SC/ST/CAT-l candidates with an income limit of 2.5 lakhs. The fee should be paid online (via ISBI Collect) to “The Finance Officer, Tumkur University, Tumakuru”. A copy of the payment receipt must be enclosed with the application.

Candidates who have qualified in their respective Master’s degrees must appear for the Entrance Test. However, those who have qualified for UGC-NET/KSET/CSIR-IRF/GATE examinations are exempted from the Entrance Test. Nevertheless, all such candidates, along with those who have qualified through the Entrance Test, must appear for an interview. Admissions will be conducted in accordance with the PhD regulations governing the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy- 2017 and its 1st Amendment.

  • SC/ST/Cat-l candidates with an income limit of 2.5 lakhs: Rs. 825/-

Selection Process:

  • Preference will be given to full-time research scholars. Each department must admit at least 50% full-time research scholars.
  • Candidates who have qualified in their respective Master’s degrees must appear for the Entrance Test. However, those who have qualified for UGC-NET/KSET/CSIR-IRF/GATE examinations are exempted from the Entrance Test. Nevertheless, all such candidates, along with those who have qualified through the Entrance Test, must appear for an interview.
  • Admissions will be made according to the PhD regulations governing the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy- 2017 and its 1st Amendment.

PhD Entrance Test Details:

  • The Entrance Test will consist of one paper for 100 marks, including multiple-choice questions. This comprises 40 marks on Research Methodology and 60 marks on the concerned subject. The Test duration will be 3 hours.
  • A candidate must secure a minimum of 50 marks out of 100 (45 marks out of 100 for SC/ST/CaI-1 candidates) in the Entrance Test to be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program.
  • The performance in the interview will carry a 30% weightage, and the entrance test marks will carry a 70% weightage for qualified candidates.
  • For candidates holding UGC-CSIR/DBT/ICAR/JRF/SRF/GATE/KSET qualifications, the merit list will be based on 50% of marks secured in the interview and 50% marks in the Master’s Degree Examination. In case of equal percentages in both, candidates with a higher percentage in the Bachelor’s Degree Examination will be ranked higher.
  • Candidates eligible for exemption from the Entrance Test will receive separate information about the interview date, time, and venue. This information will also be posted on the University website.
  • Successful completion of the Entrance Test and participation in the interview imply eligibility for admission to the Ph.D. program at the University but do not guarantee the Ph.D. degree.
  • There are no separate reservations for UGC-CSIR/DBT/ICAR/JRF/SRF/GATE/KSET and Entrance Test qualified candidates.
