The KAS Selection Process
The KPSC follows a rigorous three-stage selection process to ensure only the most capable candidates are inducted into the service.
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
This is an objective-type (MCQ) screening test. It consists of two papers, each lasting two hours.
- Paper I: General Studies (State and National Importance) – 200 Marks.
- Paper II: General Studies (State Importance), Humanities, and General Mental Ability – 200 Marks.
- Note: There is a negative marking of 0.25 (1/4th) for every wrong answer.
Stage 2: Main Examination
Candidates who clear the Prelims are called for the descriptive-style Mains exam. It consists of:
- Qualifying Papers: Kannada and English (Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks to have their other papers evaluated).
- Merit Papers: 4 General Studies papers and 2 Optional Subject papers (as per the latest updated syllabus).
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
The final stage is an interview worth 25 marks. This stage assesses the candidate’s personality, leadership qualities, and suitability for a career in administration.
