Eligibility Criteria

Candidates applying for the PhD program at HNBGU must hold a Master’s degree or a professional degree in the relevant subject, or in a cognate or allied/interdisciplinary subject, declared equivalent to a Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body. They should have obtained at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a grading point scale, wherever applicable). Alternatively, candidates with an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency recognized by the home country’s statutory authority may also apply.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be permitted for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other eligible categories, as per UGC guidelines or for those who obtained their Master’s degree prior to September 19, 1991. However, this relaxation is applicable only based on the qualifying marks without considering grace mark procedures.

Candidates whose final result of the minimum qualification degree for the PhD program is not declared on or before the date of notification of PhD admission will not be considered eligible for admission.

Application Process

Step 1: Deposit the online fee through the University website or State Bank Collect.
Step 2: Register after two days once the required fee is deposited.
Step 3: After successful fee confirmation and registration, login and fill in the personal details, upload the photo and signature. Then, provide the educational details.
Step 4: After verifying the details, submit the online application form.

How to deposit the fee:
The fee will be submitted online through the SBI direct facility. Bank draft or any other mode of payment will not be accepted.

Application Fee

  • General/EWS/OBC (non-creamy layer) – Rs. 700/-
  • SC/ST/Differently Abled – Rs. 350/-

Selection Process:

The University will admit Ph.D. students through an Entrance Exam and interview/viva-voce conducted jointly. However, certain categories of applicants will be exempted from the Entrance Exam, but they must apply online on the prescribed form along with the fee by the due date. These categories include:

  1. Regularly appointed teachers of this University.
  2. Teacher Fellow (Under UGC Scheme).
  3. NET/SLET (Uttarakhand)/GATE qualified candidates.
  4. M.Phil. candidates of HNB Garhwal University in the concerned subject.

Entrance Exam Pattern:

The question paper of the entrance exam will have a total of 100 marks. It will consist of two sections:

  • Section I: Research Methodology (50 marks).
  • Section II: Subject-specific questions based on the Post Graduate syllabus of the concerned/allied subjects (50 marks). The question paper will contain 100 objective type multiple choice questions (50 in each section). Candidates will be allowed a maximum of two hours to complete the exam. Qualifying cut-off marks in the Entrance Exam will be 50% for General/EWS Category and 45% for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled categories. All qualified candidates in the Entrance Exam will be called for an interview, along with candidates exempted from the entrance exam. The medium for the written exam will be English for subjects under Schools of Sciences (excluding Home Science), Life Sciences, Himalayan Aquatic Biodiversity, Agriculture and Allied Sciences, School of Management, School of Earth Sciences (excluding Geography, Defence and Strategic Studies). For other subjects in other schools, the medium will be bilingual, excluding languages.

  • New Delhi The University reserves the right to cancel any of the centres if a sufficient number of applications are not received. The University can allot a new centre to such applicants. The centre allotted will be indicated in the Admit Card, and once allotted, it cannot be changed.

Interview:

Qualifying cut-off marks in the Entrance Exam will be 50% for General and 45% for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/EWS, Differently-abled categories. All qualified candidates in the Entrance Exam will be called for an interview, along with candidates exempted from the entrance exam. The interview/viva-voce will be organized by the concerned department of the University. During the interview, candidates will be required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Board of Studies. The interview/viva-voce will also consider whether:

  • The candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research.
  • The research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution/College.
  • The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.
